I'm considering getting an Al Mar Hawk, one of the fancy ones with premium scales. I think the ones with briar wood scales look particularly nice but have not seen any of the in person.

If you own one please post your opinions and also a picture of one in hand would be helpful.

I have one with black mother of pearl. I also gave my dad one with honey jigged bone. I like both but the jigged bone is really nice.

Here's a not so great pic that I happen to have on hand:

The hawk is a great knife. Gets super sharp and is easy to sharpen. Doesn't hold an edge quite like some of the super steels, but it's no slouch. Fit and finish is perfect. The pocket sheath is a nice touch and will pick up a really nice finish after you'fe carried it for 6 months or so.

I'd recommend the bone.

Very nice looking picture, thank you.

I really like the shape of the thin, pointy, flat ground blade and the overall profile of the knife. Just hoping it is small enough but no so small that it is not useful. AUS-8 seems a decent choice of steel because the knife seems intended for moderate to light use but I do wish it was VG-10.

More comments would be most welcome...

What is your favorite folder with a thin pointy blade that is well under 3" ?

I have one with cocobolo. I wanted the briarwood originally, it looked awesome in the pictures, but wasn't in stock where I was looking at the time.

I love the knife. Fit and finish on it are great, it's beautiful. I had the same worry about it being too small but once I handled it I knew it'd be good, it's definitely a useful size. I recommend it very highly.

I don't have an Al Mar Hawk, but an older Al Mar Eagle w/ "wood" micarta handles. That probably doesn't qualify as "fancy", but I haven't seen many posts on this, especially pic's, so am trying my hand @ posting a pic here for the first time as well, on what I consider a more unusual Al Mar knife.

The fit and finish are awesome, still locks up tight w/ no blade-play after years of ownership.

One word Chris, Mnandi! ;)

Wow, I never would have guessed you would suggest one of those  :D

I will probably wind up with one some day, but it's not what I'm looking for right now. Looking for something small, thin, and pointy.

That is a beautiful piece of cutlery. When was it made? How big is it?

That's awesome. Beautiful grind. I wish they would come out with a new non-lightweight Eagle.

Have you seen the custom Al Mar Eagle listed under "Al Mar Prototypes" on Kirk Rexraoat's site? I hope they come out with a production version of that. http://www.rexroatknives.com/

Thank you for the comment.

I think I got it around the early 90's, possibly late 80's.. but again.. I'm not real sure. I rec'd it w/ a Sog Winder II and a Spyderco Hunter from Cuttlery Shoppes, so it's of that timeframe.

New Al Mar Eagles have 4" blades and are 9" overall, and that seems about the size of this one. It's @ home right now, so I'm not sure exactly.

Here's one of the few other places on the internet, I've found a picture of this model. http://www.ohyasuya.co.jp/edge/rare-japanese/sub/almar2.html

It's the 3rd from the right.

Excellent suggestion. Definitely on my list.

I'm leaning towards the Al Mar but will for sure compare the little William Henry lockback to it at the same time. VG-10, warnclif, jigged bone... all good stuff.

For me it's the Al Mar Hawk as well, but I opted for the Ultralight because of the one handed opening. I love this knife. While not as elegant as the nail nick versions, it still has class. The fit and finish are terrific, and black is beautiful. It is so slim and light (a bit under 1 oz.) that you hardly know it's in your pocket, and unlike some other gents' knives, the blade is long enough for nearly all my edc tasks, e.g., slicing fruit, harvesting broccoli from the garden, etc.

Well, I had the pleasure of examining many (over 20) different Al Mar Hawks, along with a few Ospreys and WH Spires. Visiting Newgraham in person certainly is nice.

One of the Briarwood Hawks is in my pocket now. I'll do a review as soon as I can take some good pictures of it. Until then, I will just say that I am very happy with it.

My wife has the black mother of perl Hawk, and I have the stag handle. The stag handle is thicker toward the end (0.525") and fits in my hand better than the black perl (flat 0.3" thick). We each think ours is the best. We have had these since around '92. I ordered an Ultra-Chef blade and the Osprey Classic in abalone last week. They should be here Monday.

The only problem that I can see with our blades is that the unlock is hard to depress. Some might view that as a plus. My wife has some difficulty with her small hands getting hers to unlock. These knives do not get much use and are as probably as stiff as the day we bought them. Very smooth action though.

I really like the fatter handle on the stag. I like the looks too. Other than that they are identical. I'm not sure if you can get the stag in the Hawk anymore.
