Al Mar hawk ?

This is a question for Al Mark Hawk owners, or those that have handled this knife.

Is the pivot really tight when brand new? How much spring tension is there on average when closing?

- I have to really apply some pressure to open it to the locked position.
- I have to manually ensure it is closed all the way. There is very little spring tension if at all. It feels like the pivot is just a) either really really really tight or b) this is just how the knife is supposed to feel. (Did i mention the pivot feels really tight yet?)

I have one handed openers with more spring tension when closing, and less hassle when opening to locked. I have slipjoints with very positive action (opening and closing), but this just feels awry.

Any insight from other hawk owners? This seems to be a blemish on an otherwise very nicely finished piece of cutlery.

I've have a Falcon Ultra Light which was very tight to open when new. After working it a bit with some MilliTec on the pivot, it loosened some. It's still a tight pivot and took some practice to open. Still, it's a great slim knife for wear IWB when I wear a suit. It's only been pushed aside by my Sebenza.

I've got the Hawk Ultralight and yes, very tight to open when new. I added oil and after a few dozen openings, it got much smoother

I've a really old Hawk - and rarely use it - just too big - so it's really tight both opening and closing! and yea it's a very well made knife.
Peace

I have a Hawk in honey jigged bone with stainless bolsters, Other than some polishing compound left over from the factory, the knife opened and closed easily. I wonder if you may have some polishing compound impeding the lock? Al Mar knives have an excellent warrant against factory defects if you need to send it back for repair or replacement.

It is a micarta model. It feels more like a tight pivot, but there may be polishing compound. I wouldn't say it open or closes easily at all. Perhaps it is luck of the draw, or perhaps it needs some oil, etc.

I'll probably contact the vendor. I've handled other knives made at the moki factory, and this issue doesn't seem pervasive.

thanks for the input.

Hawks are super nice. fit and finish is XLNT. The only down side, if its even that is that the scales are very thin, guess to keep the knife nice and thin. If its used for EDC its edges will wear and be noticeable way sooner than any other knife in my experience...though its probably more from sliding it in and out of its slip case (holster wear). mk

*just to note my remarks were for the wood burl model, synthetics should be fine

Some attention and mineral oil overnight seemed to solve the problems. I would still prefer a bit more snap, but it isn't a slip joint so I shouldn't judge it as one. It opens, releases, and closes with ease now.

It is one of my office/dress edc knives so I hope it doesn't wear to soon. I like the thin profile.
