Hi,

I have an Al Mar SERE 2000 and I bought it some time ago after reading Jeff Randal's posts about it.

Even though the knife has a very good grip (nice thickness) and has a finely finished grip/liners I have a problem with the grind of the VG10 blade.
I try explaining what my knife has:
Looking at the edge and going towards the grip the edge stops and the full material of the blade "takes over". The edge should be in the middle of the thickness of the blade material in my humble opinion but my blade has a "tilted edge" with this I mean that the edge is on 1/3 of the blade thickness so not "centered" in the middle of the blade thickness.
This is also clearly visible at the gsharpening grind as both sides show a different sharpening grind.

I try to visialize the problem:

This is the way the edge should be "centered"

I like to contact Al Mar about this but on their Website I cannot find an email address or a telephone number to reach them.

I really feel bad that this knife set me back $117.50 + postage and that the blade is ground this way

.

My Spyderco Military that I got in a trade with another BF member is ground perfectly symetric!

Please help me finding an email address or telephonenumber.

Bagheera, you must really have a fluke. I've handled a lot of these since they came out and the grinds have all been clean and symetrical. Would offer to trade my used one for your new one but this one has some sentimental value built in now

Contact Al Mar at:

You might also go on the net at http://www.almarknives.com and hit the 'request a catalog' button and leave your comments there. The best bet would be to call though.

Hi Jeff,

You must have some program running that checks out the new posts on the use of either your name or Al Mar SERE 2000

Anyhow thanks for the address and phone number, I'll give them a call as I entered the catalog request a long time ago and entered the address of my friend in San Diego but never ever heard anything from them anymore.

Cheers, how about the "Laser Strike" release date and the # 13 ?? ;-)

Cheers,

Bagheera, sounds like you got bad luck. Sorry to hear that and definitely contact them.
Jeff gave you pretty much what you need, however, it might help too:
President, CEO: Mr. Gary Fadden
their fax: (503) 639-4789
The knife seems to be a big hit. Too bad that you got a problematic one. I am certain that their best interest is to help you out with that.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

Bagheera,
Besides lockup, this is one of the first things I always check on a new knife. It's disappointing and reeks of poor quality control. I am sure that Al Mar will make it right.

Hi guys,

I called them at 23:00h local time which is 14:00h in Oregon and the nice lady told me that she would page a Gary and have him call me back within 2 hours.
It's almost 00:30 am Saturday now and I'm still waiting but I'm shure that Al Mar will somehow deal with it correctly.

The knife is fine in ALL other aspects, lockup is just right and solid as a rock it's just a pitty to see the off center edge.

I'll keep you posted and thanks for the help and tips.

Bagheera, as it is Thanksgiving holiday (Thursday+Friday) in the US most people are with their family devouring a turkey or suffering from the aftermath. I am surprised that you could reach anyone at the company. Do not panic if nothing happens till Monday.
It is like reaching someone in the office on Christmas in Eu.

It's mainly the off center grinding

not the last two photo's with the right side point grind that's a little off that irritates me because lots of knives show this.
