Hey guys I purchased an Al Mar Mini Sere 2000 (MS2KB) the other day and it just arrived. I have to say that it is an awesome knife and I've always wanted one but just never wanted to spend $170 on it because there are so many other knives out there with similar materials for cheaper, however I landed this one with an excellent deal and am extremely pleased. Anyways I noticed when I opened the box that the front of the box says 190 of 200, it is also etched into the blade opposite the logo. Can anyone fill me in on the story behind this number? I'm guessing that it was number 190 of the first 200 first production run but am not familiar with Al Mar knives at all and thought someone here might know. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

165 out of 200 owner here.

I really like the look and feel of the knife too but the micarta is a little uneven when you look close. It's not a super big deal but it's the only "knock" I have on it.

The sheath is a nice feature and seems very well made.

I've got #105......it's quite the little tank. After a bit of an adjustment on the pivot and some gun oil that blade just flies open. Nice solid lock-up and grippy G10 handles too. I had assumed the same as you regarding the numbers but hopefully someone will be along with an actual answer shortly.

I have the fixed blade model. Is that what you're talking about?

I guess I didn't realize that they had a folder with the same name.

The numbering will either be a limited edition run. i.e. only 200 of that exact knife were produced. (unique scale color/material, maybe special blade markings, etc. etc.)

Or as you have surmised, this is the initial, or pre production, run of 200 knives, afterwhich many hundreds or thousands may have been produced of which some, or all, may be identical, but not numbered.

I'm not familiar with the release of that particular knife to provide specifics.

Thanks guys for the replies so far. I am indeed talking about the folding Mini Sere 2000. It is the black plain edge model. I recieved an email from the seller this morning and he clarified that it is a first production run number. I'm not very familiar with Al Mar knives at all but I do believe that they've been making this model for quite some time which means our numbered knives must be pretty old. The particular knife that I recieved turned out to be sitting in a safe since they bought it so I lucked out. I hate to brag and all but I just gotta tell you guys what I spent on this knife. I picked it up for $75 NIB on the exchange last week! I'm pretty excited about that deal. Anyone know how long the mini SERE 2000 has been in production? And I agree that this knife is very cool. In a perfect world I would have prefered the satin blade model but I have no room to complain for the price I paid. Also the fit and finish is excellent on this knife! Much better than any Benchmade or even spyderco model I have had. (Except the Sage 2) What really impresses me is that they take the time to grind the g10 scales down the perfectly fit the liners and in the process put a real nice finish on the visible outers of the liners. This is something I VERY rarely see in any of the big name production companies. All in all I am very pleased with my latest purchase and will consider buying other Al Mars in the future.

Also whats your vote... Turn it into a user and get that black coating all scratched up or throw it in the closet and return it to its duty as a safe queen. I know a lot of you will say use it as I probably would but I do have a lot of good users already and if it might be worth something now or later on I would rather keep it as a collectible. I know it takes a long time to make a first production run knife worth anything of mention but it has been around for a long time right? Maybe it was produced in 2000 like the name implies?
