Just got one of these knives and one of the pins in the handle is loose and rattling. Once I have the knife opened and the blade is locked against the pin, there is no more rattle. Is there any fix for this short of sending the knife back for repair? Thanks

On Emerson knives, the stop pin is not fixed (screwed in), so when the blade is closed you can hear a rattle if you shake the knife. The stop pin is not in any danger of falling out, unless of course you take it apart. From the photo of the Payara on their website: http://www.almarknives.com/images/payara.jpg , it looks as though it may be an unfixed stop pin. If that's the case, don't worry about it.

I had a similar issue with an Al Mar mini-SERE. When I called their CS they explained that it was the stop pin as 3G has already said, it was part of the way the knife was designed, and I'd have no trouble with it, even though I could hear it rattle when closed.

They were right... never gave me any problem, just the little rattle.

I had it with Shrike. In my case stop pin was too short, I think you have this same issue.
Disassemble it and put something, for example scrap of paper, in stop pin hole, between stop pin and handle scale.

Take some Loctite and a toothpick. Put a drop of the Loctite on the toothpick and put it on the stop pin and allow it to run down into the hole.....won't take much, allow to dry overnight and should be fixed.

Thanks guys for the info...I ended up calling Al Mar today and the person I spoke with stated that the rattle is normal...The rattle is like I'm walking around with a pair of maracas in my pocket...I will prolly try the Loctite and toothpick fix...What color Loctite should I use?

It really doesn' matter since you won't be going back to remove it, and since it's up against the scale, you won't want to heat even blue loctite.

I would use blue, though. Red is only for really permanent.

IMO loctite isn't best idea, stop pin should have possibility to rotate, because it minimizes wear.

 +1!

AnimalHousePA,
If the rattle is as loud as you say, send it back to Al Mar and ask them to put in a stop-pin that's a tiny bit longer.;)

Ok. Maybe I was being a little facetious about the rattle resembling that of a pair of maracas. :p I'm going to give it a few more days and see if I can get used to it...It doesn't affect the deployment or performance of the blade at all so that's good. I just wont be able to sneak up on and eliminate an enemy sentry if I ever decide to become a ninja...They'll hear me a mile away...Like carrying a pack of Tic-Tacs in your pocket! :)

Lol, AnimalHousePA!:D I think you'll end up getting used to it. I did with my Emersons. Good luck.:)

a dab of thick bearing grease would prevent the noise without interfering with rotation, it should actually decrease wear, prevent corrosion and improve the rotation somewhat. just a thought.

And a good one at that! I'm going to have to try that on my Emersons.

Thanks,
