I'm looking at a couple vintage al mar knives that use RS-30 steel. I couldn't find much information on this steel except that it's similar to 440A. Al mar mainly uses AUS-8 today and I was wondering how RS-30 compares to AUS-8.
Thanks!

thanks for the reply Gator97,
I've just started getting into knives and am particularly interested in artisanal japanese folders and steel composition.
i've much to learn!

RS-30 is/was made by Masahiro in Japan.
The steel is better known as Masahiro RS-30 or MRS-30.

Thanks a lot for the info kwackster :)
I did have both steels in the chart... Never knew MRS was Masahiro. I'll combine records and add correct maker.

Al Mar Knives used to include a little card which discussed RS 30. It stated that the steel could be hardened to RC 64, but they chose RC 57-59 for ease of sharpening. It also stated that the steel was exclusive to Masahiro Cutlery Co. and Al Mar.
