For a large edc'able folder that can take some abuse, which would be the better candidate, the sere 2000 or 710 in d2. Does anyone have both?

I'm open to suggestions of other models in that pricerange with a similar blade shape and size, so that would rule out the zt 350 which I think would be the next logical choice.

The Al Mar Sere has withstood the test of time. It is a serious heavy duty folder.

I had both. Now I have just the Sere 2000.
For me it came down to the locking systems.
Just don't like the axis lock. The Al Mar has a sweet clip.

well, their are in my opinion far tougher large folders then those two at their pricepoints, but i own both, and would say get the sere 2000. its a very very well made knife, and the deep carry clip is great.

I have both as well and I agree on the sere 2000. It Is better made and the blade to handle ratio to me is better. The longer blade with the shorter handle on the 710 to me makes it a little inprecise with it's cutting and a hair dangerous.

Wow, I'm surprised that everyone's recommending the SERE... didn't know so many other people like Al Mar.

They're both great knives, I don't think you'll have a problem with either. Steel is comparable; D2 will wear a bit better but VG-10 has better stain resistance. The SERE has the advantage of a deep carry pocket clip, but the axis lock is the best around IMO. The SERE has the disadvantage of being pinned, but the 710 has a plastic backspacer that can crack over time. As for build quality, I'd give the edge to Al Mar.

the sere is somewhat tougher & vg10 only gives up a little to d2 in these models. for a hard use utility the nod goes to al mars original design. if it was for only straight cutting i would go with the 710 -1 in m390.--dennis

i also own both....i would also vote for the sere. vg10 is an awesome, well balance steel. not hard to sharpen but holds an edge for a very long time. also the construction of the sere is SOLID. also it looks cooler too =D

I own both, and it is really really hard to say. VG10 is much easier to work with than D2 though.

Both won't let you down and are time proven designs that have been out for years and have an excellent track record

I would say the 710 it's a beast and the g-10 is great , but if you can expand a little I would say Para 2 AKA the Best $100 folder ever .

I love my SERE 2000, thick lockbar, tough knife.
I also find it to be a bit more exotic than the BM 710.
Nice knife.

I have both. I love the SERE and don't care for the 710. The 710 was made with poor QC and the SERE with the best.

I'm not particularly familiar with the SERE, but the Benchmade 710 is a large slicer. I don't know exactly what you mean by "abuse", but the 710 is not a knife to chop down a tree with or stab through car doors. In fact, its blade is fairly thin compared to most 4" blade folders. The lock, of course, is about as heavy-duty as they get. But the 710 is not a folding pry bar. The SERE has a slightly thicker blade and a more robust blade grind. The liner lock isn't nearly as strong as the AXIS, but like the Spyderco Military, this is one liner lock that you never, or at least very rarely hear problems about. VG-10 is one of my favorite steels.

If you're looking for something more robust, check out the Zero Tolerance line (made by Kershaw).

I'm a lefty so the 710 with the Axis gets my vote. I just don't like right only liner locks and have actually disengaged a blade accidentally with a hard lefty grip....

" The SERE has the disadvantage of being pinned"

Tsujigirl - I've seen you state this about the SERE twice now. This knife is built with TORX.

You're right! I must have been confusing it with another Al Mar.

I cant comment on the 710. But I have carried a Sere 2000 for quite a while. If I could only keep one knife the sere 2000 would be the one. It was really designed to be a hard use knife ..hence the acronym S.E.R.E (survive, escape, resist , evade, and cut those pesky twisty tie wraps on the kids presents on Christmas morning). The only benchmade I purchased was the 940...when I opened it I thought it was a joke..I sent it back. I have an Emerson Gentleman Jim that I am very fond of and think it was money well spent...but it is not an Al Mar Sere 2000. The Sere 2000 is as close to folding fixed blade as I have seen. Once You look at the construction of the sere 2000 I think You will be convinced. I do not feel the same way about the mini sere 2000. I hope someday Al Mar might re introduce a Sere with a 4 1/4 inch blade..they would sell thousands upon thousands.

For me it's no contest Al Mar Sere 2000 at just about 3.5" of VG-10 with a linerlock and made in Japan - stacked up against the BM 710 with almost 4" of D2 with an axis lock made in the USA. BM710 all the way man & no looking back! ;)

710D2 for the win.
