i know this might sound stupid but is the al mar sere 2000 a AO. spring assistent or not?

what do you think about this knife?

The SERE 2000 is not an assisted opener. It's a good, big knife that I personally never got around to buying.

No its not a spring assist. I'm not a big fan of liner locks, otherwise its a fine knife. I prefer the benchmade 710, which is a little cheaper and has a lock i prefer. Overall I have grown less fond of my knives with plastic grips. I like the feel of metal, and it is slimmer, for what its worth.

Excellent materials, typically excellent Japanese workmanship, the proverbial "tank of a knife".

I really like mine--not the slimmest or most elegant, but it is a strong, strong knife.

The handles are G10 and it is very comfortable with a good grip. As production liner locks go it is one of the better ones.

A while back there were some D/A sere conversions, but not done by Al Mar.

It's a solid knife, but it always looks and feels out of proportion to me. It seems like to much handle for the size of the blade, etc.

One of the best cutters I own. Very efficiënt edge-geometry.
I hate the skeletonized liner though..

That's exactly what I think when I hold it. It feels like the blade should be about a 1/2"-3/4" inch longer. Kinda thick and bulky in my pocket too. I really want to like this knife, but the truth is I like my two Spyderco Militaries and Benchmade 710 much better.

The blade isn't that disproportionate in my opinion. The cutting edge is a tad short because the ricasso is fairly large.
It is a thick, heavy, very well put together folder. I, however, am not a fan of this particular liner lock. My liner has worn very poorly with very little use and has vertical bladeplay. It still locks up safely and I can spinewhack it on the back of my shoes without it unlocking, but it's annoying to feel the blade moving when you're cutting stuff.

Never held one but one CONSISTENT thing said about it by knife knuts over the years is that basically its build and design is the standard by which all liner lock folders are judged.

The Sere 2000 is a great knife. It's not all that bulky compared to similar knives, emersons come to mind, and TAD has a vallotton DA conversion or they did.

Playing with mine as I read this.

It contains everything I typically dislike in a knife, yet somehow makes it work extremely well.

I dislike liner locks, but this one is and has been rock solid and opens with a satisfying THWOK! every time.

I dislike VG-10, but this blade takes and holds an edge like crazy.

I dislike hollow grinds and spear points, but once again, this thing cuts like mad, and is pretty versatile.

I dislike thumb studs, but this one opens more smoothly than alot of custom knives costing five times as much.

It is a bit on the thick and heavy side, but still worth tolerating due to it's attributes.

Not an assisted opener, but still a fantastic little knife.

Most people will tell you they like VG-10 because it takes a crazy sharp edge and holds it well. If you like VG-10 in the SERE, what VG-10 knives did you have a bad experience with?

Th SERE 2000 is flat ground, not hollow ground. :)

I had a Spyderco Perrin that snapped on me. It had been abused in the past, and had some pretty unattractive crystals in it where the fracture occurred- Alot more factors than to just blame the steel. My dislike of the stuff is more of a personal matter than a matter of metallurgical science and reason.

Goes in the same category as people not liking blades with too much writing on them, handle shape, etc. It just don't suit me personally.

I'd have sworn my last SERE had been hollow ground, very mildly but still there. I just looked at mine more closely.....heh....yer right. At least that's one less mystery as to why I actually like the darn thing.....:o Thanks for settin' me straight!

It is a manual folder and a great one at that. I would say it is one of the BETTER production folders out there. Solid lockup, thick liners and beafy build quality.

In my top 5 and I have over 100 folders. Will always keep and carry this knife. Can't go wrong. I love it.
