Wondering if anybody has experience with this knife, What are your thoughts about it if you have? thought about getting it 4yrs ago, but, held it, feels very solid. G10- VG10 around $170.00?? I hope I put this in the right thread? Thanks

One of the best folders I've ever handled and my current 'EDC'. Extremely solid, yet not too heavy. The G-10 handle is comfortable and provides good grip even when wet. No blade play, its liner lock is 'frame-lock-ish' secure, good detention of the blade when closed, easy to sharpen like most of the VG-10 blades and above of all great ergonomics. The only downside is the that it is a bit unhandly to fine-cut compared with the Sebenzas and Millis. For 170 USD, I would have bought another one. Damn, maybe two.

I think 170 is a bit pricey for that model...
But the Vg-10 was very good... And it was a good medium duty knife...
Cant go wrong..
Thats for sure..

imho there is other stuff just as good/better for the $$ but they are good knives, some dont like the pocket clip because its not covert, that doesnt really matter to me, other than being a little long in tooth as far as design goes i cant think of any cons really, i have had 2 or 3 of them thru the yrs, and though its never been a real favorite of mine nothing wrong with it.

I have only 1 Al Mar (Shugoto) and would dearly love to get more but they're not very common here and red tape to import can get tedious. The SERE 2000 was one of the original tactical greats and has stood the test of time very well but IMO there are better designs for EDC. Nonetheless, the SERE2000, Emerson CQC7 and Spyderco Millie are all on my "to get" list if that's any help.

What do you mean by "not covert"??? The Sere2000 has one of the best carry clips on the market, IMO. Not only is it extremely strong, it allows for the deepest carry possible because it's mounted on the butt of the handle. The only thing visible when carried, is the clip. How is that not covert?

It is a rock solid folder. I much prefer this knife over the Strider SnG I owned, it just fits better in the hand and the clip allows for a deep ride in the pocket. I am also considering getting a mini 2000 for the times when the full size might be a bit too large, like when wearing a suit, etc...

Didn't have good luck with mine. It developed vertical balde play in a very short time that resulted in the liner lock moving slightly. I returned it for repair and it was OK for about a month before the problem returned. I wound up selling it to a co-worker who works on knives and thought he could fix it...

Just a lemon, I suppose. I have a Shrike that locks up as good as anything I've ever had.

The SERE 2000 is an incredibly robust knife, and the lock up on mine is superb. Fit and finish is also superb. On construction alone, it is a terrific value.

However, as another poster mentioned, it is not really a great design for EDC. I rarely pocket mine. A Spydie Police or BM 710 is a much more practical blade, IMO.

The SERE 2000 has a short, thick sabre-ground blade. It's more of a stabber than a slicer. (So more of a fighter than a worker.) And the thumb studs, although somewhat unique and bordering on architectural, are sharp on the thumb.

its not covert because of the shiny clip sticking out of your pocket FWIW i have heard folks say it should be black & shorter.

Do you own one?

The SERE has one of the most 'covert' profiles in knifedom today.
Mine disappears in my pocket. In fact, it the most covert knife I own. I wish every manufacturer made pocket clip designs like Al Mars SERE.

Al Mars SERE is one of the most under-rated knifes on the market.
Great knife.

The action on the Sere 2000 is one of the smoothest of any production knife I have ever handled. I have had one for quite a while and really like the knife.

Nevermind SIFU1A.

Obviously you don't know what you're talking about.....All SERE 2Ks' come with a black clip.

Great knife.

i have owned several of the new ones and had one of the original ones too.

maybe this is why there is chocolate and vanilla lol, while its "ok" i suppose its never been one of my favorites, i can think of several which i prefer like the spyderco ti ATR, emerson CQC12 or '13, just to name 3.

FWIW i dont like the way it attatches to the top of the thing, i dont find it aesthetically pleasing but i suppose some do.

i am neutral about the clip myself, but like i stated above some folks think the clip isnt covert enough, but i dont worrry about that myself.

if you wanna bet on that i'll bet ya and let you name the amount.

i dont know about the last few yrs but all of the SERE's i have had had a poilished or chrome pocket clip of that i am sure, this was in ~ '02 or '03, so perhaps you dont know whats up.

edited to add - i suppose mine were earlier models the new ones are black FWIW, but at least some of the earlier ones had a satin clip, could be some of the later ones also since al mar isnt exactly my fav i dont really keep up with all the minutia about them such as satin or coated clip availability, evidently dcfireman's is satin.

if you think i am lying about it i can take a pic of it i sold one to a bud and IIRC he still has the thing lol.................if you dont think i am lying imho an apology is in order brother, but suit yourself.

as far as it being covert/not covert again i suppose thats a subjective thing, since all the knives i normally carry are legal in my state and i have no concerns with carrying at a job/etc i dont really worry about if it is or not, but i do remember a few yrs ago in a couple of threads in this forum folks saying the clip was too showy for them, in fact if ya look i in my post i say "some folks think" not "i think", i only remember because it was one of the few cons i have ever heard about this one, it is a good albeit a little expensive knife, and if the design "grabs" you (it didnt me) ya could do worse.

but, imho ya could also do better.

If it had some sort of axis lock then 170 would look pretty cheaper, but I'm sick of liner locks. Can someone make a titaninium framelock then cover either side with scales? That'd be a pretty secure liner lock right?

I had one and sold it.

I loved the deep-carry, butt-mounted clip. The fit and finish were excellent, except for the sharp liners. Action was very smooth, and the lockup was good. I liked the slightly rounded edges on the G10. As stated above, the elaborate thumbstuds added a subtle class to the knife.

IMHO, for EDC, it was too much handle for the size of the blade. Mine was a black blade and I am not into coated blades. As a lefty, I can tolerate a RH liner lock on a lesser knife, but ultimately I felt that I had too much "hobby equity" tied up in a knife that was a compromise for a lefty. If I was right-handed, I might still have it, but again, there are many other attractive options at the price.
