I think about to buy one of this folder models. Two german knife dealers offer them. One dealer offers the folder with AUS 6 steel, the other dealer with 440 C. Is one steel specification wrong or did Al Mar produce two different models?

Any opinions or experiences regarding this folder are welcome. Thanks in advance!

I hope that someone who could give me the wanted informations/opinions has overlooked this thread.

I want to know too!

A guy I knew had one of the originals back in the early eighties. I remember a green or brownish micarta handle and a large stiff fabric sheath. That knife was awesome...and then some.

Seems to me both AUS-6 and 440C may have been specced. I recall an article saying the cheaper steel was used so it could be more easily sharpened in the field, including on a rock if need be. (Don't know if that's hype or not.)

C'mon, who knows about these babies?! :) And post some pics, please, while yer at it! :D (I'm sure I can't afford one.)

The 80's/90's AMK's used AUS 6, which is essentially 440A.

440C is closer to AUS 10, a steel that Al Mar didn't use for the SERE series knives.

I have just read your answer. Thanks for the information!

Thanks for the pic, Horus! And the info, Sheldon!

Was I right about the "sharpening on a rock" idea? Also, what are these things running nowadays?

I remember my bud paid at least $200 for his way back when. But I bet he sold it for peanuts--he was always running out of dough and selling/trading stuff.

Jeez Karl,

I don't know about that 'sharpening on a rock' thing...

The first of the SERE's was the AMK-3003A, the large Micarta handled folder, and those came in a camo pattern belt sheath that included a sharpening stone inside, behind the knife.

Those first AMK SERE's can easily be recognized by squared blade clip, as opposed to the 'scalloped' clip as shown in Horus' picture.

Jim Nowka has a new knife magazine, "Knifeforums.com, the magazine", debuting in September, and I hope to write an article on the Al Mar SERE line for that magazine soon.
