Vintage Gold Chop
In the early 80's I was a Wilderness Ranger for the Forest Service and needed a high quality folding knife that would hold up to heavy use in remote areas of California. The Al Mar SERE, rubber handle quickly made it's way to the top of my list. I have used my SERE for almost 35 years now, and it looks and functions just like out of the box. It is time to pass this great knife down to my son but I need to replace the two Gold Chops that fell off many years back. Can you help me find replacements and the best way to reattach. Hope you can help -

HEy Steveo. Man I been collecting AL MARS for 10 years (about) and have never seen gold AL MAR emblem forsale.. Wish i could be more help!

I been collecting AL MARS for 10 years (about) and have never seen gold AL MAR emblem forsale....
it would have been possible, had al mar knives been manufacturing knives...
sounds like cannibalized spares are the only option for such venerated vintage material at this point.
i had the misfortune seeing the neoprene scales one of those large sere folders of mine,
slowly deteriorate into sticky goo.
well, it's gone now; along with the pair of golden al mar shields.

Thanks all for the reply - I got the same answer from Al Mar Co. - The next question is I also have a mini Al Mar SERE (same vintage early 80's) that has the rubber handle. The rubber is separating from the liner and is in bad shape. The blade and liner are like new and I was wondering if the knife could be retrofitted with a different material. I live close to Eugene OR, so looking for a high quality knife maker that could take on the job. Any other options?

The neoprene handles would epoxy right back on if they are not too torn up. Custom handles on yours, though, would be the way to go!
