Al Mar Shiva Fixed Blade Questions...

I have had a fixation with Al Mar knives of late. I bought a Mini Sere fixed blade in March and since then, I picked up a folder and one of their older daggers.

I am considering dropping 300 or so bones on one of their Shiva fixed blades, but I can't find much information on them anywhere on the internet other than outlets selling them. I think they're a really nice looking knife.

Does anyone actually own one and have some input, pro or con, that they'd share about them? I would truly appreciate it.

The size and shape seems to lend itself to an all-purpose type of knife to my eye. I have a Cold Steel Trailmaster in Carbon V, an Ek Commando, a custom "bushcraft" knife and an Izula for fixed blades now (and the aforementioned Sere). I'd love to add the Shiva to my collection but would like to hear a little more about them 1st. $300.00 is a lot of money for me to spend on a knife.

Thanks for the help!

The Shiva doesn't seem to be held in very high regard as I would have expected. I thinks it's one of the nicest looking knives on the market.

Anyone else?

I don't think many people here have experience with the model. Its a fairly expensive knife, but I agree it is one of the nicest / cleanest looking knives on the market. Al Mar as a company makes a very fine blade so I doubt you'd be disappointed.

Thanks for your input.

Actually, the lack of enthusiasm or interest in this knife has pretty much resulted in my decision against getting one. A few days ago, I was all in for dropping the cash for one. There are some hardcore knife guys here and there's hardly any talk of them. I'm not basing my decision exclusively from this forum. I googled the Shiva and found basically nothing in terms of reviews or general information anywhere on the internet.

I may change my mind but I doubt it.

I have an Al Mar Shrike which has got really good fit & finish, ergonomics. Handled a SERE Operator before in a shop and it feels good as well.

From the Al Mar 2006 catalog, the Shiva is the most expensive Al Mar fixed blade at 479 USD MSRP

A 5.25 inch blade of laminated VG-10 stainless steel.
Overall length of 10 inches.
Blade thickness of 0.160 inches.
Black Micarta handle with stainless steel hilt.
Weight 5 ounces (this light?)
Comes in a black leather sheath.

This info came from the catalog. I have never seen it in person though. Hope this is of some use to the OP.

An alternative, albeit a hard to find alternative might be the bark river escourt boot knife. I don't know much about barkies but others here definitely do. I find them similar in looks to the al mar though still slightly less visually appealing.
