Howdy,
Just wondering if anyone knows what steel was being used in these guys. Even given the limitations of this design (GREAT at fighting, so-so at everything else) I've always liked it and never tried Al's version. I guess I'm just hoping to hear that it's not AUS-6, although given the era these were made and the Seki manufacture, I'm afraid that's exactly what I'm going to hear. :D

t1mpani i have'nt kept up with al mar although i met him about 1979. all his early stuff was good steel. my collector buddy says mars are consistent quality.

Oh yes, his quality of build was always top notch. And, really, I suppose I'm allowing a bias that isn't supported by what I said to begin with--it's not like this design lends itself to enormous amounts of utility use or extensive cutting, so 440A or AUS-6 really would do just fine. Given the era, and being stainless, I'd guess that's just about what it has to be, as cutlery stainless at that time was not nearly so wide a field as it is now.
