So I cant find anything better for EDC than the Al Mar Ultralight Series. The Eagle is a 4in blade weighing in @ 2oz. The Falcon is 3.15in blade weighing in @ 1.25oz, and the Hawk is a 2.75in weighing in @ under 1oz. As much as I want to try some higher end knives, I cant seem to justify it when these Al Mars are so unbelievably easy to carry. anyone else have any other ideas?

I've been eyeballing the Ultralights for a while now... very sexy lookin' knives! I'll probably end up getting a Falcon at some point. 'Talon' or 'non-talon'... that is the question!

But I hear ya, OP... I haven't seen an Al Mar yet that I like better than the Ultralights for the price/perk ratio.

I've got both a Hawk and Falcon (both non Talon). They are both excellent knives and easy to carry. The blade geometry makes the great slicers and they have very good fit and finish. No regrets with either of these.

I just got this Burger EXK1, yeah, it's quite a bit more costly, being a custom, but as far as lightness, comfort in carry, and cutting geometry, very well done knife.

I happen to have the regular Falcon model with the Talon blade, and it is still a really light knife to carry around. It is one of those knives that are just really well put together and have a feeling of quality. I just wish Al Mars were just a bit cheaper though, kind of seems like a lot to pay for AUS-8 but the quality makes up for it.

While not exactly the same (no thumbstud), the AG Russel 3in lockback folder and the rest of that line are very similar in most respects. The CF one is 0.7oz and has a VG-10 blade.

Like the look of these though, but I agree they seem a bit pricey for AUS8 and micarta.

I carried a 70's vintage Al Mar Falcon for many years til I wore it down to an 'exacto" #11 blade shape. It was ALWAYS a joy to use and sharpen. It still sits on my desk and gets used frequently to slit open an envelope/box, or clip an ad out of a magazine or newspaper. I don't clean my nails with it though - that would be a bad, bad, bad idea

CRKT Centofante Tribute. Very much in the same vein as the Al Mar ultralight series but less expensive (and in very nice burgundy micarta).

Weight is generally not a concern for me, so I see these knives as really expensive for what you're getting.

The cheapest price I can find on the Eagle, for example, is 120$ shipped. Lockback knife with AUS-8a blade for 120$? Are you kidding me?

That's just my 0.02$, though. If the knife suits you and you're willing to drop the cash, power to you.

I think thats true. And the same can be said for many other makers. But in my case, my desire for an Eagle Ultralite (or Emerson or Sebenza or you name it) will overcome my brain's ability to say no. I bite the bullet once, and then have a sweet knife for the rest of my life. But I agree that on paper, AUS8 + micarta should not equal $100+.

Agreed... it's probably the reason why I don't already have one. I think Al Mar knives in general are all a little on the expensive side, but as you say, if you wanna see the show, you gotta buy a ticket. ;)

It is the blade that I wear on my shorts in the gym.

I prefer a bit more of a sturdy blade and do EDC one.

But for the times that you want undercover and SHARP ,cant beat the 4" ultralight.

You have a gym knife? That is an admirable level of knife addiction. Well done sir.

I have been eyeing the ultralights for a while, they would be nice for more formal occasions.

Another worthwhile mention on this thread is the AG Russell Featherlite series----closer in size to the Al Mars here than the 3" lockback, and also available in VG-10.
