I just acquired a SERE 2000: anyone know how good al mar is regarding warranty?

I just sent them this email:

Warranty Question: I have a well-loved SERE 2000 which originally had the black coating on the blade. Now the coating is at about 50%. Will you:

  • strip off the remaining coating (I would do this myself, but I just love the graphic on the blade - you guys have the best in the business), or
put on a new coating, or
    replace the blade?

Also, do you sharpen?

I am a pretty big bladeforums user, and would love to put a nice report on your company's warranty there. Thanks for your response!

I don't see how that would fall under a warranty coverage. The coating on any blade (aside from maybe some type of DLC or titanium based coating) is designed to look nice only new, it wears off easily as you've experienced.

I am sure they sharpen though, maybe for a fee. Some companies charge a fee, others ask you pay shipping both way, some just say send it in get it back only pay original shipping. Then again I don't see why not just sharpen it yourself?

regarding the coating, I know it, and I know I could just remove the coating, but I don't want to lose the great red symbol on the blade by stripping off the coat. My sharpening skills are in sore need of improvement!

They do make an uncoated blade, but I'm not sure they'd swap it, and I'm pretty sure everything is done on an assembly line regarding paint so I doubt they can do that. Personally I'd say just strip it and check out richardj for sharpening.

I sent my Mini SERE in for warranty work and was a little disappointed. It took forever to get it back and every time I called about it I was told I would get a call back in a little while. The calls never came. There was tiny chip in the blade when I sent it in and it was still there when I got it back. But the main reason I sent it was because of up n down blade play and while it was better when I got it back, the problem returned about a week later.

All in all not a very good warranty experience. At least for me. I suppose it could have been a rough week at the office over there...
