Can anyone comment on the quality of Al Mar's products. I'm kinda new to knives and just bought an Al Mar SERE 2000 with S30V steel and a D2 Ka-Bar. I'm just making sure I haven't got ripped off! How good is S30V and/or D2 steel compared to 1095, vg-10, aus8, etc.? What is the ultimate steel used in knifes?

I'd recommend you do a search on the Sere2k, I think you'll find plenty of discussion.

You'll find that the Sere 2000 is among the best production folders out there.

There's a steel FAQ around here somewhere also, check it out.

Then I think it's a SERE Operator, not an S2k. I was wondering where you found an S30V S2k.

Hey, Chuck. Don't you own a big knife company? How come you're asking all these questions about the competition? ;) :)

My name is Charles Buckalew, I've been nicknamed Chuck Buck by my dad, just a coincidence, pretty cool though, huh.

I got my Al Mar SERE (not sure if it's 2000 or operator, good question) s30v at a gun show in Sacramento. i got the guys info, if you want it, he don't have a website, just a phone#, sells out of his home in Fresno, I trust him, I got a great deal on my knife, $160 out the door and it's real s30v. Amazingly sharp.

ChuckBuck -

I have 2 Al Mar SERE Operators. I think they're great knives.

You mentioned that you're new to knives. If so, you should definitely read up on sharpening techniques and on S30V in particular. This site is a great place full of knowledgeable people and a great resource if you take the time to learn to use it.
