Does anyone have the polkowski guant neck knives and what do you think of it? Also does anyone know where I can get 2 of them in new condition? Thanks

I don't have the Gaunt, but I do have the Ruvo neck knife by Al. Les Robertson picked it up for me at the New York show earlier this year. Les usually has the largest Polkowski selection around. If he doesn't have it, he can ususally get it quickly. Here's his site:

Les, This is kind of a long story but I`ll try to make it short. I had called Al about a month ago about his guant knives and we talked a while. He told me he was making one to take to a knife show, I believe in Conn. and since I seemed like a nice guy that he had just as soon sell it to me as anyone else. He told me to call him around the tenth and he would probably have it ready. I started calling him on the 6th and called every day but only got his answering machine. Finally I left a message on the 9th , believe it was and he never got back to me. At any rate I finally got back to him yesterday and he said he was sorry but it was sold. He said to make it up to me that if I would send him a 60.00 deposit that he would have me 2 finished in a month to a month and a half. So i immediately sent him a check out yesterday. Now that`s one heck of a nice guy. He is also going to charge me 130.00 each instead of the 155.00 that you wanted for your one. Have a great day Les. Roger

Hi Roger,

After talking with Al last night, it would appear you might have been a little hasty with your "month to month and half" delivery time quote.

By now Im sure you have received the message that Al left for you last night.

Al was concerned that his customers might not have understood exactly what happened. Currently the only guants he is working on are for you Axel.

He chose to sell Roger his own personal guant. Then he told Roger he would "work one in when he could". This is not 4-6 weeks.

In all fairness Roger, he would have had it too him before 2002. So I stand corrected on that point.

By the end of the conversation last night, I got the impression that you may still be looking for two guants.

So if you have one or two you might want to email Roger.

Les is definitely the source for quick access to Al's knives. I picked my Scorpion up from him without any wait.

The main reason I ordered directly from Al is because he's making a Gaunt trainer with sheath for me as well as a standard one. The wait that Al quoted me was for 12 months which would make them due in Aug. He said that he would get them to me sooner, and I have already sent my full payment. I am eagerly awaiting them.

Les' website has the Gaunt priced at $130. Why was Roger quoted a price of $155? Also Al sells his for $120, unless he has recently raised the price.

Les, your website lists the Gaunt as being made from ATS-34. My understanding is that Al sold you some prototype Gaunts made from ATS-34, but that the standard Gaunt is made from 440C due to its better rust resistance. Are you having Al make your Gaunts from ATS-34?

Axel

Hi Axel,

My understanding was that the retail price was $130.00 for the Gaunt. My web site reflects that price.

However, at times, I do buy knives from other sources. Such was the case with this knife and such was the case with the price of $155.00

As you know it takes a while to get knives from Al, even for me. Roger was a client, and I hope he will continue to be one in the future. It was not an effort to gouge on a knife, I think everyone here would agree that a $25.00 premium was not excessive. I offered the knife to Roger at that price as I would have anyone because of the circumstances. Had someone chose to not pay the premium then they could have ordered one through me for Al's retail price and received it in 4-5 months.

Axel I mentioned you by name, as Al made a point of telling me he was worried that you would be upset because of how long you have waited. When the month-month and half time frame was posted.

As for the steel, you may be correct. I listed it as ATS-34 as I was told that was what the steel was. Perhaps I have a "prototype" Gaunt. Ill check with Al, if that is incorrect I will change it.

Thanks for the input Axel.

Les,

Thanks for the clarification. Actually I didn't have a chance to get upset about the posting because I read Roger's posting and your clarification at the same time.

I'm just happy that Al is willing to work with me on my special requests.

Axel
