The Peterson's 9/98 Combat Knives had an article about Al Polkowski's knives but concentrated on the Kasper fighters. It did however mention he makes an Urban Kukri, but did not give specs, tell price, or show pictures. I haven't seen a website for him listed, and would like to learn more about the knife.

The same issue got me started buying Himalayan Imports Khukuis, but their smallest usually stocked is 12" overall w/ 8" blade. Beautifully ergonomic, but playing with their bigger khuks makes me want a mouse kukri for a companion for my mouse guns.

Can anyone tell me where to get info on the Urban Kukri Al makes? Thanks, Rusty

Hey Rusty,

Awhile back, Beau Springer posted about his "Nasty Boy", a John Greco custom kukri in, if I recall(he reportedly normally uses a2 for most of his knives), 5160, and a 10 inch blade. John Greco has a great rep for handcrafting quality knives at reasonable prices. I am confident he could craft a kukri to your specs. He is a maker that is on my growing wish list.
If you pick up the March 99 Tactical Knives there is a profile article about Greco and his blades. An example; his "Companion"a modified drop point(with really slick lines and "tactical/stealth-fighter look,IMO"

, with a 5" blade of a2,heat treated by Greco to rc57-59 of 1/4" stock and cocobolo scales is listed in the TK issue for an unbelievable 84.95. Imagine that, for a custom knife . I do not currently own a Greco, but I hope to soon. This guy sounds like a dream.

Perusing Polkowski's latest catalog, the Urban Kukri is a medium sized utility fighter,
5" extremely forward canted blade, 3/16" ATS 34, your choice of matte or satin finish and handl material (G10, Micarta).
from catalog:

"The Urban Kukri"
"A contemporary mini-kukri particularly suited to today's urban environment. Massive chopping power with an intimidating profile. Also great for campers and canoeists. Double edged only. IWB standard. Shoulder rig optional."

I personally have always liked the look of the urban kukri, although have never seen one close up. If its made to Al's normal exquisiteness, it will be a fine urban fighter indeed.

This is going off topic but John Greco (and his wife) is another maker I have very good experiences with. I have his Companion. The stock is A2, 1/4 inch, making it a heavy duty knife. I got a photocopy catalog with the order. His knives are all 1/4 inch A2 and come with nice black leather sheaths.

He is currently working on new models with 3/16 stock of A2. They won't be ready til mid to end of May.

Thanks everyone. Emailed Al for cost of his catalogue. Wrote Les Robertson back too, and am looking at the Greco article. Do they sell adult sized baby bibs for knifeaholics to wear at knife shows to keep the drooling off the knives?

For the record, Al responded w/in 24 hrs. to my email requesting my snail mail address. I could get used to doing business with people like that real quick!

Rusty,
No bibs
