Hi all!

I'm very new to knife collecting. Recently I came this auction for a knife blank. The URL is HERE

Im wondering for this kind of quality of damascus blade is worth buying this amount of money? Also, I intend to use thin ropes to make the handle, so that it will function like a survival knife where I can convert it into a spear when necessary.

Anyway, the former question is more important. Please help, thank you!

I don't have much experience with Alabama Damascus, but thought I would mention that in the description they state that they will provide heat treating instructions. My guess is that the blade is in the annealed state and not suitable for a knife until heat treated. You mention that you are new to collecting, but don't mention any experience in knife making. If you want to give making a knife a try, there are kit blades available that are already heat treated, polished and only need a handle. It might be an easier way to start. Just my two cents worth.

I noticed that they have listed that blade a few times now and no one has bid on it. I have heard that Alabama Damascus is good steel, so I would think that the opening bid price is a good deal. Wait until the auction is just about over and then put in your bid.

Harry posted while I was typing. I hadn't noticed the stuff about heat treating. If you aren't able to heat treat the blade, or you don't know someone that will do it for you, it would be best to look at the blades Harry recommended.

Brad stuff is very good and a good deal as well, the HT is easy and if you need a hand feel free to drop me a line and I can help you out if its within reason. I have built many knives from Alabama damascus, one time I had a small problem Brad offered to send me a free bar to replace it thats good CR work.

He also attends lots and lots and I mean lots of shows, so he has a good rep all the way around.

This knife was from a bar of Brad dammy

What SAR says. Brad is good people. He took over the old parker owned place down in Jackson ala. Quite a set-up. Brads stuff is of high quality. Nothing super exotic. Just good solid quality steel! Mike and Manuela

What Michael and SAR said. Brad's place is just about 12 miles up the road from me. They make a load of damascus, including the damascus for a pretty well known knife company.

Brad has a heart of gold, and is a great guy to deal with.

just met Brad at the Tulsa show.....I finished three kitchen knives from his damascus and the etch came out great. If you are OK with random pattern the prices cannot be beat. He does a lot of shows and sells everything from hardened blades to large billets of annealled damascus.
Some of his billets are HUGE, way beyond the capabilities of my blade furnace and treddle hammer. I'll continue to use his steel primarily for damascus kitchen knives. Thankfully Tommy McNabb lives 10 minutes from my shop and has an air hammer and builds an awesome 40 ton press.....man, that's the way to make damascus !

WOW! thanxs for the great response! Anyway, I pass it cuz I have no knowledge in heat treatment.

Plus, the cost incurred for that would be over my budget. BTW, I also have to take into consideration that the overseas shipping would not come cheap since I have to commission someone to do the heat treatment for me. BUT, I will definately buy from the seller once I get a better paying job. It's definately in my "must-buy" list

Sorry if my English sounds bad, cuz I'm not a native speaker. Thank you all once again.

ODD that a FIVE YEAR OLD thread was resurrected with nothing more than a link???

They set up at Blade and have a LOT of options to buy damascus.

I have no knowledge as to how it performs, and opinions about that would be interesting.
