I had been looking for the perfect small fixed blade knife for pocket carry, clipping on a pack, etc. I ran across pictures of Alan Folts Baby Bear. I contacted Alan and he graciously made one up to my spec. I got it last week and now have another on order.
First, about Alan. I have had nothing but great experiences in dealing with knife and tool craftsmen, and Alan has been simply great.
Second, the knife. I simply love this knife. I am an avid collector of knives and I have recently become a convert to neck knives--though I carry them as key fobs, mostly. I already had a Perrin Shark and an HAK. I love the Shark and carry it all the time. The Baby Bear that Alan made for me is a heavier knife than the Perrin and the ergonomics of it are exceptional. There is very little new under the sun--but this design is hard to appreciate until you handle it--it is something special.
I have a two-tone knife with G-10 handles. The workmanship is amazing. I own quite a few Peter Atwood gadgets and this knife has that same vibe of amazing craftmanship and attention to detail in a small package. The blade came very sharp--I expected no less.
This knife will rarely, if ever, be left at home. It is small and sheeple friendly while allowing a very solid grip in the hand. This knife is truly locked in when gripped--even more than the Perrin or my HAK. This is the key to making a small knife truly useful and this knife is exceptional.
Regards,
