Hey Bry...when you wake up from your adventures, here's some pics from when I went to Kodiak two summers agao. I had no INFI. I did not even own a RAT then! The pics are kinda poor quality - I think my father in law got the digital camera out of a gumball machine!

It was a homecoming for my wife's family who lived there on the Coast Guard base for seven years. We were able to stay on the base in the guest house when we were there (my father in law was a Coast Guard pilot)

We were there for eleven days, but we had two GREAT days of fishing. The first, we rode 4-wheelers 16 miles through some very rugged terrain to get to Saltry Cove. We caught something like 25 reds (sockeyes) and a few pinks that hadn't turned yet. This was the begining of August.

The halibut trip was a couple days later. I caught a 65 pounder and my brother in law caught a 90+ pounder. The guide used his .357 to put them out of their misery before dragging them into the boat, which was pretty cool (except for one of my brother in laws who is a bit sheepish about such things).

The 4-wheeling trip required that we wear waders. We did quite a bit of fording through streams. It was also still very cool at 7:00 in the morning. .44 is under my coat......

This is the big halibut for the trip. They fight upside down, so their belly is toward the surface when they're coming up. We were fishing in about 240 feet of water, so it's a long crank to the top.

Bry - I didn't know you snuck along for the ride! In the last pic, my youngest brother in law in the black sweatshirt looks curiously like you!

Those size halibut are the best eatin'

Thanks for the pics, it helps since I got hosed yesterday :grumpy:
I'll get some AK pics up in this thread shortly (No fish ones though).

Hey Gregg,
Their great pictures mate. Are they good fighters? My only real fishing stories are when I shouted my son-in-law and my self on a two day charter fishing trip. We were catching King Fish mostly.
He was doing most of the catching and I was in charge of the burley trail. :barf: :barf: :barf: :D

Nothing like riding a horse at all. ;):D
Ian.

The Red salmon, in the second pic, are the best fighters :D They are the most fun IMO. As for the halibut, I've heard it's like reeling in a log. No fight, just weight.

I believe the technical term for that is "chumming"? Reminds me of one of my all-time favorite movie scenes: Roy Scheider chumming when the shark rears up and looks at him. "You're gonna need a bigger boat."

The reds are actually explosive fighters when they first hit, but we landed them so quickly, it was over pretty fast - but it was a lot of fun. We'd toss the flys out there and toss and toss and then we'd get one and it was a major rush.

The halibut did fight, but like you said, sort of like dragging up a log. The closer they got to the boat, the more they seemed to fight. It was somewhat of an endurance contest with the bigger ones. I don't know how folks fight the large marlin or tuna for as long as they do.

Looking forward to seeing some of your pics!

Same here, it amazes me. There was a recent Blue Marlin competition in NC apparently. One morning I was driving to work while they read off the previous days numbers. One of the boats pulled in a 818lbs Blue Marlin, dropped my jaw.

At the time, I thought I was dieing.. :barf:
Ian.

Edited to add.
I’ll try to find a picture of my at sea excursion.. my son-in-law holding up a fish. Not me hanging over the side being sick. :D:D
Ian.

Here are some pics from my trip. The pics (to me anyway) aren't the greatest. They don't show Alaska's true beauty. I did see a grizzly on the drive home, but there wasn't a place to stop safely for 4 miles past it :grumpy: Next trip though, I'll have some great pics. :D

My brother and I actually saw these two bulls together on the way out of Anchorage. Strange thing is, in that exact same spot and many hours later on the way home, we saw two females together. Go figure lol

And if you notice the blue on the mountain, that is actually part of a Glacier. My dad is coming up soon, so I will have more pics of various places.

Thanks for the pics. I'd like to go back to Alaska again someday and spend most of the time fishing and hunting.

Here’s a picture of my fishing trip. :D
Actually I’m taking the picture and my son-in-law is holding the fish, we caught about 11 of these, though this was the largest. King Fish.

My second time out I managed to take travel sickness tablets and enjoyed myself, though I’m a true land lubber. :D

I was thinking along the same lines - to me a 5 lb largemouth bass is a big fish. :D

Thanks for the cool pics!

Thanks guys.

Ian: I think your fish had an accident :D ;)

I'm toying with going fishing tomorrow... And to give you guys an idea on how big those halibut are, that guy on the far right (my stunt double :D ) is, guessing, bout 6'5" (Trying to remember how tall woodrat was. Taller then me by a few inches and I'm 6'2") BIG HALIBUT
