I had the oppertunity to use some of my Bucks in deer camp last weekend,I didn't tag out but my father in law got a nice buck, and brother in law got a small buck ,so i volunteered my knives and services.I did both deer, feild dressed, skinned, quartered, and de-boned the smaller buck, the bigger one was left to hang a few days to tender up a bit.I did not sharpen the Buck ag 110 while doing these deer, but when i was finished i needed to sharpen it,as i used it to split the pelvic bone and that dulled it up a lot,my hand ax wasn't handy so i used the 110 .If i just used it for cutting ,it would still be sharp.Took me 10 minutes to bring it back to RAZOR sharp ,you gotta love Buck and their s30v steel.I have 5 ag stag 110's but i used the one Joe had re-worked for me,thanks Buck and Joe!

I don't take too many pics ,I guess i should invest in some camera gear, the way i break things, the wife won't let me touch her cannon xsi rebel.LOL

I just love reading about knowledgable guys doing field tests using Buck knives . I agree, forcing a knife to cut thru bones will dull even a good blade . A good time to get a small saw and store it in your pack . Thanks for the info. Razor and all the effort you put in to get the experience you just told us about . I'm sure theres other things you learned as well . DM

Thats alright Razor,I can't talk about breaking stuff myself.

Very cool thread RB,

How do you split the P-bone on your deer? (please give us details). I have always done it old school with a knife myself. I have been using my AG 110 ever sense I used it in deer back in 05, I just love the S30V blades.

Before you go back out into the field RB, stop at the store and buy on of the disposable cameras at the store. You will have some photo's to share and won't worry about hurting your wife's prize photo gear!

I never split the pelvis bone on a deer. I've never felt it necessary.
For working over an elk though, a small hatchet works great and is a lot quicker and less work than most saws, or trying to do it with a knife.

I hope they gave you some back strap for all your help :D

Sometimes I split the bone ,most times i don't bother it all depends ,when the carcass is sawed in half it needs to be split anyways, but i de-boned this one so i guess i didn't need to split it.I always use a hachet to split the bone, didn't have it with me on this trip ,so i used my knife, there is a spot that you set the blade on and give the back of the blade a tap with your palm, and it will crack it easily.I have had the rosewood ag since they came out, just thought i'd do a quick review on the stag model, its a great knife i won't hunt without one now.

:) Sounds like you guys had a great time Razor. What did you use to sharpen your AG 110 in the field? They really are a fantastic knife!

I always take a sharpmaker with me,I almost always need to sharpen somebody elses' knife so i try to pack it along .

s30v is the first stainless I've bought in a very long time. And the stuff impresses me. It actualy takes and holds a quality razor edge.

I don't split the pelvis on a deer or elk, either sort of a waist of time . I have before and a good saw makes quick work of it . A hatchet is heavier but a good tool to have in more items than just game . But in darkness try to hit you same mark . I've carried both and they both work very well . Just settled on the saw route . Every hunter/camper should have one or the other plus something to sharpen these and the knife with inorder to have an enjoyable time . DM

when splitting the pelvis I usualy baton a hatchet through. less chance of an accident than swinging a blade or hatchet when bloody etc.

I just use the saw blade of my Leatherman to split the pelvis.

It's real quick and it allows the legs to spread out and the meat to cool better.

I open along the sternum all the way up the throat, too.

I don't think I'd ever use a S30V blade to cut bone........BG-42 or D2 or something similar, but not S30V.

I've got one around here, someplace. What is it about this design? My kids are always 'borrowing' one of my 110s. I can almost never find one ... and I've got something like 6.:grumpy:
