"Man...We're gonna cut you up so bad your gonna wish we didn't cut you up so bad".....Then we'er gonna eat your garbage.

I heard something about a Boy Scout getting chewed up down your way this last weekend by a griz.I think the only people who were killed this year were that couple up in ANWAR. It seems we have a lot more bears than we used to.

Hey Ak, hows the little chinese kid?

The kid recently attacked?

He is fine. He startled the bear because he didn't remember his training to make noise. The bear did what was instinct and that was too bite. The bear and boy are both fine.

Gday KAK,
Not sure of the validity of this email I received, but it made for a good read.

"The following (first two) pictures are of a guy who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear. He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head. The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12' 6" high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world. Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as atrophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport (to remind tourist's of the risks involved when in the wild). Based on the contents of the bear's stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours. His last meal was the unlucky nature buff in the third picture below.

The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker. The other body has not been found. Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (they ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body), it only wounded the bear and probably angered it. The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker.

Think about this - If you are an average size man: You would be level with the bear's belly button when he stood upright, the bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows."

Three years ago a friend and I were stalked by a sow grizzly and two large cubs.I was scouting for a documentary on the North Slope and happened to be get in the middle of a caribou migration. My friend shot a large bull and as we were skinning it out in open tundra we noticed the bears. They were about a half mile away and came within 100 yards before they winded us and took off.We saw 8 bears on this trip.
I have lived here 25 years and never killed a grizzly.I certainly would if I had to.

Yeah. I have been close to grizzly's and never had to kill one either. I wouldn't want to, but if I had too, I as well would do it without hesitation.

Living up here, you hear some wild stories that are true. I know one guy that actually took his deer from him while he was skinning it. And he is not the type to ever lie.

When you're a Griz, you're a Griz all the way
From your first cigarette to your last dyin' day... ;)

I have a friend who guides on Kodiak who tells me the bears have been conditioned to come to the noise of gun shot and chase the hunters off their kills.

Or they're peed off and looking for the culprit who ate their porridge and slept in their beds. :D

I have heard that as well AKIvory

For anyone not knowing, Kodiak is an Island south of Anchorage and is populated with deer and grizzlies. As my fellow Alaskan stated, when you fire a gun on that island, you are competing with the bears for food and just rang the dinner bell

hmm, in the bad 'hoods around here, my 9mm or .357 suffices.
for up there .454 Casull comes to mind (in addition to the obligatory rifle).

My dear departed dad used to say about being good at whatever you partake,
"Son if your going to be a bear be a Grizzly"
Kind of stuck with me.
Saw a grizz in the "Bobs"(Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana) in 1975.
100 or so yards upwind of me.Had a .243 rifle and a 22 pistol with me.(hunting deer)
Never knew I was there and I was very glad about it.Skulked away quietly.
Very impressive animal in the wild.
Randy

This huge grizzly will be on display at the airport you mentioned Stockman, when we lived there it was two large polar bears and on Fort Richardson there were more stuffed bears in military offices. Scared the crap out of kids for sure. Wonderful picture too! :)

My Lord ! That is one big bear...
The bears pic is pretty :) Alaska looks like one heck of a place for sure....
That big bear though , honestly I would freak if I saw it alive , wouldnt matter to shoot it , my biggest rifle is 30.06... a brain shot might take it but otherwise I'm just gonna make it mad , guess if I ever run into something that big I better say my prayers.
