Any Alaskans out there? Tell me something about your state. How's life, weather, scenery, etc? I really like Maine, so because of some weather and landscape similarities (or am I wrong

) I think I'd like Alaska.

I want to maybe go to work for the National Park Service or Forest Service, after college, and I think Alaska is the place to be headed. I'm not big on frozen tundra, but a more moderate area of Alaska would be nice--any thought?

Thanks, you crazy Alaskans

Alaska is a great place. Especially if you like guns, KNIVES, hunting and fishing. right now we just had over a foot of snow dumped on us and it is above freezing. So its a mess. There aren't any really good knife stores. Lots of Ulus though.

SE AK has to be the most beautiful part IMHO. It is considered a rainforest though. Lots and lots of rain. It is gorgeous when it is sunny though. The S Central Panhandle is the most populous area and really the only place that has driving room. Best King fishing in the world. Reds and silvers aren't too bad either. Bring several filet knives. 4 or more. Never been to Fairbanks or other regions so can't really comment. Kodiak PA can probably fill you in on Kodiak. The park service and forest service has plenty of jobs. Especially in the summer if you don't restrict yourself. The tourist industries are big then.

Gator,
I live in Kodiak which is a neat place to live. Kodiak is the second largest island in the country second to the large island of Hawaii. Our weather is quite temperate though you wouldn't think so if you looked out of my window and saw all the ice on the road. The reason our island is milder than the mainland is that the Japanese tropical current circumvents the island. We get lot of rain, but on a sunny day you would think you were in heaven. A great fishing, hunting, hiking, camping place. I like it so much that I just bought a house and plan on staying here until they kick me out.

I know Dave and Yekim live in Alaska too so you can get their opinions, too.

Kodiak is also home to the Kodiak Brown bear. An amazing animal that can grow over 12 feet tall! My boys and I ran into 5 of them last week. What a sight.

It's a great place to use a knife, too. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Hppy holidays!

That sounds really good to me. I live in Florida and am absolutely set on getting to Alaska one day. Maybe to stay. I have a love for the wilderness, and Alaska has a lot of that. I consider you guys very lucky. Take care. Jeff.

I went to visit Alaska about a month ago. I was at a conference in Fairbanks. It was nice and pretty

Sounds great so far . . . any chance for off-roading, like, say, when i own a land rover?

Gator,
Many people use ATV's out here to get around since some of the roads are in bad shape. The ATV is the primary mode of transportation in the villages. Some people abuse them and violate the environment which is too bad. Lots of ATV injuries here...too many. People don't know their limitations. As far as 4X4 off roading there are some places like the poor road system. Lots of great hiking, camping, kyaking, fishing, hunting etc....hundreds of isolated areas to do this.
