First named storm is hitting Florida. Off of work till the storm passes.
I sure wish the best for all those in its path.

The neighbors had some trees down last night. Lots of wind and rain.
They say it will be another bad season for hurricanes. This storm is the earliest of recorded hurricanes.

I don't think Alberto ever made it to hurricane status. The NHC issued hurricane warnings, but the storm itself never developed pass Tropical Storm (peaked at around 70mph sustained, 4 mph short of a hurricane).

It will still create a big mess; so, best of luck getting through this.

Hope our southern neighbors are all able to ride this storm out in safety. Appears as though some significant rain is heading into GA, SC, NC.

Thanks, Steve. This one is no biggie.... people will lose their docks and piers, though, with a 7-9' surge.

Cats. 3-5 get my attention, though. Just unpacked the POD from last year and found all my MRE's.... Two things depress me: bottled water and MRE's.

 :( :( :thumbdn:

Ad... where did you get your MRE's? I might need some this year. I'm a total newbie to the hurricane season. Give me a nice blizzard any day :)

Being a Floridian by heritage, and having most of my family still living there, I'm often tempted to move back. Then I think about a friend of mine, a former panhandle resident who now resides in San Antonio, Texas. He and his family "survived" several bad ones, but it still took it's toll on them. Damage, disruption, hassles, and expenses, they all add up. My sister had the roof taken off her house twice in one summer. First time just caused major damage, second time finished the job. Carpets ruined, sheet rock ruined, furniture ruined, everything ruined. Tough girl, good stock, stuck it out, stayed put, rebuilt, and chalked it all up to "if it wasn't one thing, it would be another, so you just do the best you can".
Most folks who live in Florida, and ain't just down for the winter, have paid their dues. If not, they will. Don't really see myself moving back there, but Florida and Floridians stay in my prayers.

Some nice soldiers gave them to me at an "aid station" where they also give out ice and bottled water.

May you never be there, ACS. :(

Sarge, many thanks for those words. The story was told while you were overseas, but I lost my coastal Florida panhandle house twice. (The first floor anyways). The FEMA trailer was a lot of fun; part of me came to an end there.

Even if we wanted to sell right now the property values are way depressed. One more and the my wife's dream of living with a view of water will be over for good.

Smoke and prayers for the Florida guys. I love the state, myself. My wife wants to do the the island cruise thing. Why go out on a floating death trap (i no lika da open water:foot: ), when you can just DRIVE (i no lika da scary metal bird things, neither) to Florida and get sun, sand, and everything from Disney to the Keys?
I don't think i would have the will to put up wtih hurricanes. I'd rather take my chances with the weather around here. It can tonrado roulet, but i'll take those odds.
We're supposed to go down to Florida for a few days in August to a time share the wife's folks have through their church. Don't ask me where. I like Florida in December....when it's cold here....and it's too cold for the beach (I no lika da boring endless sandy things)....and I don't have a million things to get done at the office during the hottest part of the year:foot:  Anyway, I hope that the lower half of the state is still there when it's time to go.

I get mine here:

Very good prices on ALICE packs and other gear. All his MRE's have heaters. Not crap civilian stuff.

The Ocala/Gainesville area got light rain. Only the media in this area had a storm.

You will melt in FL in August which is our hottest month.

Same here, Steve, but southern Indiana is one of the most humid places in the country since we sit in the ORV. It doesn't get much hotter than 98 or so here, but the heat index is well over 110 in August. Muggy as all get out and very little are flow. I guess hot is hot:)

I agree!!
I had a project at the Alcoa plant in Newberg in July and August. It was on the the Ohio. We had to water the barge down twice a day and build sun shades for the welders. It was like an oven and no breeze. The only other place as hot was Childersburg, Alabama. Both places hotter than Florida.

The sun is more dangerous in Florida though. Burns the skin very quickly.

Ad... thanks and hopefully you won't either. But I do think this'll be a bad season (just have *that* feeling).

Funny, as I express my newbie worries about hurricanes around here, folks say no biggie and that last year was just a bad year (in a town where there are A LOT of homes that still have damage from Wilma). They'd rather deal with hurricanes than tornadoes. I don't know... I lived in tornado country all my life. Been through four of them, but never been hit. You don't get much warning, but the devistation isn't near as bad as what a hurricane will do in scope (I'm talking towns as opposed to whole regions). I think I'd rather live in tornado region... As soon as I get into my apartment, I've got to go get my storm kit built up. Food, batteries, cooler, bbq grill, lighting, battery operated fans, etc...

But FIRST.. I've got to get the A/C in my car fixed  Stupid thing went out on me this a.m. Seems like the closer I get to paying it off, the more things break. The a/c emphasized to me the need for the battery operated fans. Last time power went off here, it took a more than a week to get back on from what I was told.

Steve... thanks for the link. I'll check them out.
