They take up next to no room and they ignite instantly with a huge flame. Open the pack and you have aluminum foil to protect your flame from wet ground. I tested these out this weekend and they worked awesome. One tiny little spark on the pad soaked in alcohol and it went up with flames that were 4 inches high. The paper/foil caught as well.
 
Good question. I'm not really sure. I got bored staring at the pad burning and I threw my kindling on top. It went for at least 5 minutes but it was kind of hard to tell because it got engulfed by the fire. Because of the paper and foil which are all soaked in alcohol, the whole thing catches, but it burns slowly.
 
I've carried them in my kits and my wallet since maybe 1980, though mainly for first aid. They do work for fire starting though.

They should be checked from time to time, especially if kept in the car or wallet. They tend to dry out, depending on how they are kept. After a while you'll get the feel of whether they are dry or not without opening them. What I do is replace them with new ones and keep the old ones at home for first aid or cleaning purposes. They are good for getting ink stains off wood surfaces.
 
:thumbup: yeah, i carry these in my kit too, takes up no room. I don't know how long they burn though, never let one burn completely.
 
Good idea. Never crossed my mind to use antiseptic wipes.

Another thing I've used was DEET (the Muskol high proof stuff) to squirt onto some tinder and that helped get a flame going. I though to try it when I looked at the big flammable symbol on the bottle. Didn't smell that great though.

Probably cuz those things are made with ETOH as well. :)
