alcohol swabs

A good thing to put in a pocket kit as tinder: isopropyl alcohol swabs, 70%. They take up little space, are relatively cheap,(a couple of bucks for a 100 pack) and can be lit by a ferrro rod directly, then used to ignite other tinder.
This is beyond their antiseptic use. (I am not a doctor...is alcohol safe for open wounds, or is it topical only?)

Hi,

I'm no doctor also but I wouldn't use alcohol to clean wounds,I mean the 'inside' I would rather use clean water or water that was purified perhaps by using Iodine.
Alcohol inside wounds will kill lots of cells that will then need to get removed from the wound hence you get puss and dead cells are good food for all kinds of bacteria so you get more puss :(.

I would use the swabs on the outside around the wound to kill all the nasties there that might otherwise get into the open wound.

By the way, these alcohol swaps work perfect for starting your other tinder.

I am a doctor and do a lot of wilderness medicine.
NO I don't use alcohol in open wounds only to clean intact skin. Yes they are great firestarters.
I prefer benzaconim chloride pads to clean open wounds and just plain soap and water with heavy emphasis on the water.
Hope this helps

Doctom,Iwould appreciate some realistic advice from a doctor for a very serious first aid kit I am assembling.I have many unusual items already such as adrenaline shots and various meds and topicals, but what kind of antibiotic would you recommend as a solve all cure for things such as bacterial infections, waterborne infections,or any other fever causin infection?thanks in advance.
