Hey guy's,

i need to order some steel and am looking at Aldo for this batch. my question is: has anyone baught his "belt finished" steel? how close to tolorance is it? i need .1875" but if it's with in a couple thou, i can live with that. please let me know your experience with this stuff.

thanks guy's

I've picked up quite a few bundles of Aldo's 1084 belt finished steel. Just an FYI, I'm pretty sure his belt finished steel is only available in 6" long pieces, it's primary purpose being a component for pattern welded steel makers. And it's perfect for this app.
There are quite a few widths available (1" - 4") and a multitude of thickness. The scratch pattern is running perpendicular to it's length (as it should be for this purpose) and isn't what I would call "precision ground" (Blanchard Grinder or Surface Grinder). It's more like "KMG" ;) :D You would probably be closer the the shipped thickness you'll get if you can drop ~ 2 decimal places in your .1875 tolerance.
I use it because it eliminates a couple steps in the first stack of the pattern welding process (cutting to length and cleaning the mill scale off). The 15N20 I've been using (also Aldo's) comes clean as a whistle, so basically, with the belt ground 1084, I can just start stacking and tacking ........... then on to the welding forge

I hope that helps you make a decision :)

I build folders without a surface grinder, so precision is key for me. Aldo is willing to belt grind a sheet of cpm154 6" x 36". he told me that his 180 grit belt finish will take it to about .190 - .195. i can deal with that as long as the thickness is consistant, and finish is'nt to rough.

I had a piece of cpm-3v ground by Aldo, I think he told me the tolerances but I forget. He was very helpful over the phone and had my order out very quickly.

I just recieved a 6" x 36" .190" thick chunk of Aldo's belt ground cpm154. this is as accurate and has nicer finish them most precision ground steel i've used. Aldo rock's!!!

Actually, I turn rocks into fine steel as well! Wait till we get the new rollers back. We plan on spoiling you guys rotten.

What kind of steel supplier interacts with makers on a regular basis?... honestly... you should just stick to your skids, Aldo. Disgusting.:barf:

See you at Blade? I hope you have the same neighbors this year.... hubba-hubba. I spent a LOT of time at your booth... looking away from it.

Actually Justin, we will be getting back the new roller today. We removed it about a week ago and we are swapping it out for a higher durometer serrated one. It should help the process a great deal. We will set it up and run some test pieces through over the weekend.
