ALICE pack for my outdoors pack

I just got an OD Green Med ALICE pack and I’d like to know of any suggestions for inexpensive mods.

I’ve been told to swap the metal buckles for Fastek buckles. Has anyone had luck just buying 1-inch buckles and putting slots in them instead of paying for preslotted one?

Any instructions/vids on putting a grab handle on it?

It’s also been suggested to change the straps over to Molle straps if it has the original straight straps. Anyone know of a good source for these replacement straps?

Other suggestions? I’d like to keep mods as inexpensive as possible without going too “ghetto”.

Thanks for your time/suggestions!!

I have a large alice pack in my camping/hiking rotation. What I would put on the list of "must" changes, are a better pad and better shoulder straps. Everything else is just personal preference. I actually prefer the metal buckles as I have see plastic break on the trail. If you want a grab handle, straps, or other mods, head over to tacticaltailor.com . They are pretty much the authority on alice mods and improvements and are very affordable.

I did this stuff:

Metal side-release buckles, which I cut a slot in to slip into the loops.
Sternum strap
Emergency whistle
Name panel

Stuff not shown in my thread:
Replaced kidneypad with a pad/belt combo
Added super-simple paracord handle (no braiding involved, so there isn't much to make a tutorial on, though I would love to see one that I could actually accomplish)

It is so funny...the thing I hated the most about the army was the antiquated "backpack" I was forced to wear that was so uncomfortable, the sucky, uncomfortable issue boots, god-heavy sleeping bags, and shelter halves. Especially since i knew there were great packs, boots, and tents that could have made my many military outings a lot more comfortable. Funny to see people purposedly buy that equipment to use for fun.

I would have gave two mos salary for them to let me use an osprey atmos 65 and my lowa boots.

Let's see........$50 for an Alice pack, or $200+ for an Osprey Atmos 65. I'm guessing there's your answer!! :p

I got one from mountain gear a few weeks ago for 139.99

I replaced a Gregory Shasta that I had from 8 years ago. I'd pay 70 bucks extra for comfort and the weight reduction

I have one of the medium Alice packs. It is my hate object. I frown at it every time I see it. I may eventually have to give it to someone. But I am generally a nice guy, so for now I just continue to frown at it. Occasionally I give it a light kick. Not too much though. It is still almost like new. Why did I buy it? I bought it when I was truck camping during deer season. Then I tried carrying it and remembered why I hated them. So I treated Alice with malace and made her live in the closet. :grumpy:
