I am looking to purchase an all around field knife but need to keep the price under $150. So far I am looking at the Benchmade Nimravus and the SOG X-42 Field knife. Does anyone have any other suggestions or comments on the two knives listed?

Welcome to the forum, schapman. A while ago I was choosing between the x-42 and the Nimravus as well. I chose the Nimravus at the end and I guess I have chosen wisely. It's a lagre blade in a small and slim package.

Two things the Nim over the X-42 are the sheath and the handle material. With the Nim whether to get a custom sheath is solely a personal perference, as the factory sheath is very useable indeed. For the X-42, however, an after-market sheath is madatory as the factory one for the X-42 is very poorly made and its leather was so soft that it is bound to be cut by the knife when drawing it in and out someday. Handle material-wise, the SOG is made of Zytel, the Nim has G10, nuff said.

For a bit more money u might consider to get the Chris Reeve Mk VI. Currently I am having my eyes on it too. :D

I have the Nimravus also.
I have a ton of production and custom knives, and always turn to the Nimravus as a all around/med. hard use knife.
Mine is the 154cm version and will take a very, very keen edge, and hold it!
One of the sharpest knives I own.
With a 4.5" blade, it would also make a decent defensive knife.
You cannot go wrong here, highly recommended!
There is also a M2 steel version of this knife, that I have read nothing but praise about.
It should be able to hold an edge even longer than mine (which is a very long time).
Nimravus would be my recommendation.

you may want to look also at the swamp rat "bandicoot" or "howling rat". they have a great reputation on this forum. also their warranty is awesome: if it breaks they will repair or fix it-- no questions asked! :)

Hi,
I don't have any info on the knife you listed, but I have a suggestion. Have you checked out Bark River Knife and Tool? They make what are considered some of the best bush knives. In fact, the Northstar and Mikro-Canadian are designed with the help of Knifeforums members, and the Northstars construction has been documented step by step over at knifeforums. All of their knives use A2 tool steel, and come in a wide variety of handle materials.

A few dollars more can get you a Dozier custom. Great knives that come in great sheaths.

Welcome Shapman. It was the same question (field/bush knife) that brought me here in the first place, I wonder how many others did the same?

I'm using an Ontario RAT 7 as my bush knife at the moment - but I have passed the oodd lustfull glance at the Nimravus, I reckon it's a very good knife, just a bit short for my needs.

Wait till I've got a pic of my Nim taken and posted. :) It's set up with a custom IWB sheath from Survival Sheath Systems and a lanyard. U gotta see how slim that sheath is. Nothing excessive, just the essentials. Simply so sexy in my taste.
