can anyone recommend a good ,water proof , durable parka? preferably one that can conceal a firearm well. i have a nice arc teryx climbing jacket but i want something more durable and geard for bushwacking through the nastieness but will still be presentable for wearing in public/ccw. ive learned a whole lot from everybody on this forum and have made various changes and adjustments in my gear and techniques . thanks alot guys.

I live in southwestern british columbia, a temperate rainforest, and I've learned one thing... there's no such thing as waterproof. Eventually water will find a way in. For my money, I wear an oilskin W/ wool linders, keeps me warm in cold weather, and reasonably dry, considering how wet it is around me....

I would have thought the Arcteryx coat would be tough enough for bushwacking unless its made of the new thin type materials.

Unlike Mork I find that a quality 3 ply gortex coats made with a heavier fabric and seam taped works very well in torrential downpours. Never a leak.

these coats ain't cheap however and the DWR finish coating must be maintained for breathability.

arcteryx works fine but i think its more geard for climbing and being out in torrential downpours . its the theta ar model and its already popped a couple holes that were easily fixed. gore tex and thorns dont mix . i have no problem with the jacket most of the time its just the thin material that gets on my nerves. im leaning more toward the oil skin i think . thanks for the advice guys . any body know where i can get a good oilskin parka ?

the theta model retails for about 475$ also . thats too much money to destroy in the briars . i just need something more durable .

I personally find oilskins too heavy and not breathable but they sure are durable. YOu must keep up the wax treatment on them or they will leak as as well. Hard to find one with a hood too.

Why dont you look for a heavier gortex backed fabric from other makers as they do exist. The new paper thin materials are not for heavy bush travel agreed.

The Gen 1 Military goretex has a nylon liner that is incredibly effective at wicking water INTO the jacket from your pants or around the hood and sleeves...I learned this from first hand experience...

ive had an old gen 1 gore tex parka for years and it sucks cause i bought it used and the pit zips leak. its now retired as a barn coat of sorts. id like to have a new one i think,in black. im going to look at cabelas and my local surplus shop and see what i can find. i just want something cheaper and more durable than thin goretex. my holstered weapon has actually rubbed a bad wear spot on the inside of my arcteryx jacket . well see what happens . itll be a little while before before i go shopping so im open for suggestions.

A Filson jacket might be good. They come in 3 different fabric weights (all a variation on the above recommended oilskin), so you can choose the amount of durability you need.

Apart from the Lodge collection all of Filson's stuff is well thought out and very well made.

Some of the larger outdoor shops carry Filson, Bass Pro and Cabelas are the two I know of.

Filson.com is really the only place to get their full line. They are great about exchanges and returns in the event you don't like it. For what you are wanting to do I'd recommend Shelter cloth.

thats exactly what im looking for , thanks man. their retail prices are ridiculous in my opinion though . maybe im just poor i dont know . thats the type of coat ive been looking for and maybe one day through hard work ill actually find one for a descent price. thanks
