Hi everyone. I'm looking to get a new custom knife that looks around what is seen in the provided photo (and sorry for the quality of the sketch. That's probably the first time since childhood I've drawn anything). I'm trying to design it so that it will be a good all around knife but with skinning the main concern.
Anyway, I want anyone who wants to chime in to chime in. About what type of wood on the handle would look best, what type of handle design would be better (or at least look better) than what I've got drawn on it now (and please provide photos if you say something there), what type of steel you think would be the best (right now I'm leaning towards D2 because it is nearly stainless so doesn't stain easily but performs similarly to carbon steels, or so I've been told), changes to the blade style like a different point, a less or more pronounced belly, or if perhaps I would be best served if the thickest part of the blade was a that the base of the blade rather than about an inch up from the base, or perhaps you would prefer a wider or narrower blade.. I'm looking for what you would do if you were designing a knife like this for yourself. Listening to what other people think is one of the best ways to learn and get ideas.
Thanks in advance for any input.
The specs on this drawing are:
Blade Length- 4.5" (about)
Blade Width-1.25" (at the base, it's a bit wider at the middle of the belly)
Handle Length-4.5" (about)
And I'm planning on going with 1/8" thick stock with, of course, a full flat grind.
