ALL OPINIONS: SOG Creed, Cold Steel Trailmaster, or Ontario SP50?

My birthday is coming up and I can't figure out what I want to get myself. I do a lot of wilderness backpacking and prefer larger, stouter blades for wood processing. The SOG Creed is one I have drooled over for awhile because of its attractive design. I have always wanted a Trailmaster, seeing as it has become one of the grand-daddies of wilderness blades, but the SP50 seems to be a new up and comer. Right now my modest collection consists of a SOG SEAL Team Elite, Marine Raider, a BK2, and a BK4 Machax.

:D

So it all boils down to: Is the SOG Creed really just a fighting knife that can be used in the bush if it has to? Is the Trailmaster still live up to the hype with new competitive options like the SP50 from Ontario?

Judging by there specs I'm sure they would all do the job but for me it would be between the trailmaster and the ontario. I would pick the trailmaster.

Just to confuse you a little you could try the Ontario ranger rd9. It has replaced my cs recon scout (carbon vblade). The knife is a beast and can take some hard abuse. However if forced to decide between the three u listed I'd go with the Ontario as the trailmaster in sk-5 steels not great and the cost ofthevg1 blades just down right nuts. As for the sog I have onlyused the seal pup and while that was okay I was not floor by it.

Heh? The Trailmaster is a grand-daddy of wilderness blades? News to me.

You like the SOG....get it.

If the title "grand-daddy" is being used to reference the sheer amount of time it has been produced for, then it makes sense since the Trailmaster has been around for over 20 years.

The TM is the most traditional design, but in terms of performance I'd go for the SP50. The TM is nice but the handle is rather uncomfortable when you have better choices at hand. I'd also agree with wildnewfie: Take a look at the RD9.

Can't go wrong with the Ontario Spec-Plus series. I have an SP-51 & i love it. Handles: I guess you either love em or you hate em. I love it, great grip even when wet. I have many SP blades & would trust my life with any one of them. The SP-50 is a 1/4" thick & Full Flat Grind, so it would be more slicey i guess. I prefer Sabre Grind myself, just for a little more strength when batoning. The wood i get for free is full of knots.

SP-2, SP-8, SP-10, SP-17, SP-47, SP-51, SP-53, SP-Kukri. The new sheaths are even better than the older ones.

Of the three you mentioned, the only one I have is the Creed. I like it, it's a good chopper, I'd prefer a different, nylon or kydex sheath, but the leather one works. Still, I really prefer my BK-7 to the Creed.

Of those listed I'd get the SP50. I've been drooling over ontario knives for a long time and with all the reading I've done and youtube videos I've seen I'm convinced that you just can't go wrong with anything from ontario. I wish I would have ordered an SP5 back when they were in production but they make so many other great blades. I'm sure the trailmaster is a great knife but for the price of the TM compared to anything from ontario, I'll go with ontario.

ESEE Junglas. Beat the crap out of mine and it's still going. Plus there is that sweet lifetime warranty, and the steel is excellent. Amazing sheath. Probably the best mid-range priced knife I've seen. SOG and Cold Steel don't even compare. Ontario I'm not sure about.

BK&T
Ontario
ESSE
KaBar

& many, MANY more, that you can't go wrong with. Do your homework, check the specs & get what YOU want. Just be honest with yourself on what you will be using it for. For me, the edge sharpness is not really relevant. Sharp is good no doubt, but i have had to sharpen almost all of my blades. BK&T/KaBar, ESSE & Ontario's (at least the ones i have) come PLENTY sharp out of the box.

I'm +1 for the ontario I use sp 10 and rat7. In combination with spyderco manic 2 translucent.

The Junglas would be up on my choice! But I can't for over the 200 for it at the moment.

My cousin just got me a KABAR kukri. I would rather of had the Ontario version spent the extra for the Cold Steel. It's an awesome chopper, but I'm wandering if I should look at getting myslef a less chunkier blade now.
