The best hawk for self defense and / or chopping kindling will have a wedge to make a tight fit to withstand impact.
Throwing is a different ball game! If you throw your wedged hawk sooner or later you will break the handle. An un-wedged handle will not break if the throw hits the handle on the target. Un-wedged for throwing is the answer.
Having a hawk that will "do it all" is understanding that you must make a compromise between the two, which means no wedge. Or, you can get two hawks. One for throwing and one for s/d and chopping.
The CS rifleman's hawk would be VG as a SD/ chopper/ nail pounder. Too heavy for throwing.
The CS trail hawk is the lightest and would be good for nailing/ chopping/ throwing.
The Frontier hawk would be best all around. What I like about the CS hawks is the allen screw., but remember you need to tote an allen wrench. Needing an allen wrench is another trade-off .IMO the CS hawks , because of the allen screw, are the most versitile hawks made. YMMV
Oh BTW I just did a mod on my frontier hawk. Pics to follow...
