I think it should have been someone's repsonsibility to tell me earlier that I needed to get a 22" Ganga Ram Special.

To think that, until today I have been missing out on this monster...

Wow. I think my 20 inch AK will now have an inferiority complex. This Bura beauty is huge. I just love the curve of the blade. Yvsa, I'm with you...I love the curves !!!
Huge wood handle. Nice wood too. I can almost get both hands on this one. Yowsa!! This thing must be a helluva chopper.

I can actually wield it one handed, but I would imagine my wrist will scream after a while.

I like the way Bura put a tapered end on the handle of the chakma to distinguish it from the karda, both nicely done BTW. The scabbard is perfect in every repsect.

I am amazed at the quality of this one. Bura is the King of Khuk's. The man is truly phenominal.

Ok. I forgive you guys for not telling me that this was a must have

And it is one helluva chopper and it excells at felling trees and brush. Ya don't have to swing it hard.
The weight is many times enough to go through somethng fairly thisck.

Nice ain't they? Now you know why I would like a baby GRS one of these days..... And, yep!!!! Sarge is right. Ya gotta, gotta get 'em all.

A few months back I believe I commented that the Ganga Ram would be appropriate to do a bris if you ever found any Jewish whales.

Rog, HIKV would have prompted you sooner or later to get the GRS....relax.....

Thanks guys, I'm just kidding of course. But wow, this is one nice Khuk. Another model that I will have to eventually own 2 of, so I can keep one lookin' purrty.

Rusty, I think it could handle the whale bris,no problem.

Love that curve!

Yes uncle I have seen the pics of Ganga Ram.
I suppose that one made by him would have his "spirit" and therefore be of more sentimental value.

But this one is truly "The Beast From the East."

:
I still marvel about Ganga Ram and his 70 year old nephew and often wonder how they're doing and if the world is treating them okay.
Eighty must be a very long life in Nepal I would think anyway.
The Ganga Ram Khukuri I would really love to have is the one shown in the original pic of him and his nephew.
I bet the one portrayed in the pic has even more spirit than the ones he made for HI if that's possible at all.
The size of it brings to mind another question.

Bro in a given area of say about 30 square miles how many different styles of khukuris might be made?

And more importantly would a kami like Ganga Ram make more than one style khukuri for the people that do business with him?

Here's the original thread for those who might need a memory jog.

Thanks for the link, Yvsa. Now we know why Uncle is moving next week.

He needs a bigger bed to hide his collection under.

It's about one traffic signal north. Half or 3/4 mile from where he is now.

In 30 square miles count on 30 different styles of khukuris.

Life expectancy for males in Nepal is now in early 50's to the best of my knowledge. When I lived there is was in the 40s. But those who make it past childhood and early adult diseases often live to quite an old age. I guess they are the tough ones. The oldest man in Nepal died a couple of years back and I think he was 137 or claimed to be. He had been smoking for more than 120 years and drank some sort of alcohol almost everyday. There is still hope for me!!!!!!!

Do families with farms have more than one style of khukuri to work with?

And I am assumeing that most folks have farms or at least a garden of sorts or have family with farms?

I am also guessing that kamis have a reputation that follows them around. The kami may be noted that he can make one style of khukuri better than another, rememberng that Every Kami thinks He is the Best Kami in all of Nepal.

Different cultures facsinate me in the simlarities we all have rather than the dissimilar.
I wonder if anyone ever argues or discuss who is the better kami or which khukuri is the best khukuri for a given task?

Pala's ranch is a good example. They had maybe 6 or 8 khukuris laying around, each different for different jobs and all well worn. Old Kanch Kami made most or all of them and he was very good. He may not have been the best but if you get a chance to look at RayC's Kancha Kami special you'll have a very good idea of just how capable he was.

The GRS is a great khukuri. It chops better than my 22" Ang Khola and is about a LB lighter. The GRS penetrates deeper but does get stuck sometimes. I will put up with freeing the GRS for its deeper penetration anytime. As a felling khukuri the GRS would be impossible to beat.

The GRS is not quite as versitile as the Ang Khola. It does not split as well or have as much lateral strength as the Ang Khola though. I take my GRS out more often than the Ang Khola.
