All Steel Endura with VG 10 blade

I did a search and couldn't quite find an answer even though I'm sure it's been asked many times before.

For years now I've had an all steel Endura with what I believe is an AUS 6 blade. It's been a hell of a knife and as far as I'm concerned it's the best $40 I ever spent.

I recently experienced an episode where I lost it for about a week and began to contemplate replacing it... which I will here eventually. But when I was doing research with what big old Spyder to replace it with, my first thought was to see if they had the same model but upgraded. I remember for instance when Enduras came in... was it ATS 55? Oh heck I don't know my 420 from my D2 but you get the idea I thought they'd have upgraded to VG10.

Now I've had really good luck with AUS6 and even better luck with AUS8 but I'm just surprised they don't offer an all steel Endura with a VG10 blade.

I figure they must sell a ton of all steel Enduras and I think they could sell even more with an upgrade in the blade steel. I know it's kind of weak argument because my old Endura has done many many things no knife was meant to do and can still hold a good edge. I have abused this product and I would have considered it to be the best investment I've ever made had I torn it apart a year ago. I'm not complaining I am just curious because I am a knife dork and I worry about things like this. What a sad life I have :D

I'm just curious... do they want to save the VG10 for the Police model or is it some kind of manufacturing problem? I could kind of see it if the steel handled Enduras are made in a different country than the plastic handled ones... well even then I don't understand why you couldn't have one factory make the handles and then ship them to the other factory and put the VG10 blades on them. Is the expense of the all metal handle really so great that the product wouldn't be in the same price range if it had a better steel for the blade? Or am I the only weirdo who likes the all metal construction (i.e. do the plastic handled Enduras just way outsell the metal handled ones)?

Or is it something we could see in 2005? ;) The Endura's changed a lot over the years maybe it's something to consider.

Look at the (fairly large) price difference between the stainless (AUS-6) Endura and the stainless (VG-10) Police model. There isn't ALOT of difference between those two, aside from the steel (the police is alittle longer, and the Endura has a wider blade), but the Police cost quite a bit more $. For the difference that Spyderco would "have to" charge for a VG-10 Endura compared to the current AUS-6 one, I'll be happy to stick with AUS-6 on this one.

Most of the steel-handled models are "price point" designs. They utilize the best steel available that will fit the price point.

So it probably is the money. I was under the impression the Police Model cost more because the blade seems to me like it would be more time consuming to grind into that shape and I've been told, now I don't know I've just been told, it's got a stronger lock.

Maybe my beloved steel handles cost more than I think they do.

I'm just awfully curious at this point if anyone has ever tried to bastardize two Enduras together to create such an unnatural combination :D

I realize of course there would be absolutely no point whatsoever in doing that but I have to wonder.

I'd like to see the steel handles drilled or slotted for a better grip and a lighter knife.

FRN handle is cheaper than the steel one. So, to maintain the same price basis for the Endura family, they have to use a lower cost steel for the blade.

I think there would be market for a VG10 (or S30V :p ) steel handle Endura.

I would certainly buy a PE and SE.

I think that's a good question for this forum:

Would you buy a Steel handle Endura, with a higher grade blade steel, in a price range of US90 or 100 ?

And Sal, what do you think ? And a limited run ?

While we're dreaming I have to say that although I'll probably be going to the Military (love the Para but it's a just a tad too small) or just maybe the Police I'd love to see an "Ultimate All Steel Endura" limited run with something like an S30V or VG10 blade like almtiba said. Really to me having an all Steel Endura with a premium blade steel would be like having a custom folder. I think an MSRP around $110 would get one in my pocket.

While we're dreaming even more I'd like to see an "almost high end" all metal folder (the high end all metal folder being the ATR) from Syderco as either a compression lock or a lockback with a blade like the Endura's: about 4 inches with plenty of belly.

There's just something about an all steel Spyderco that's nice. Some people don't like metal handles and that's okay, but I appreciate the extra weight they add. Plus, and I don't know how to say this, I like using an all metal for EDC utility simply because it cleans up good and looks classier.

Maybe I should try the Persian? :D The Micarta handles seem like they might provide a similar feel and it's a VG10 blade I think but don't quote me.

SS handles and VG-10 would definitely be a sweet package on an Endura. How about if they one upped it and went to Ti handles and VG-10 (not S30V because it kind of steps into the ATR range) and make it a limited run. I don't see the Ti handles as that much of a possible idea though because it would probably up the costs too much being that they don't already make Ti handles in that pattern and the initial costs would be the major problem. I think the best combo would be the SS handles, VG-10, and a wire clip, what about you guys?
