If you don't know a ricasso from a detent from a slipjoint... If you want to know how to tell a great knife from garbage... If you want to learn how to make the most of the Bladeforums Classifieds... If you just like knives and want something to read...

BLADE presents "Blade's Guide to Buying Knives." It includes the answers to most of the beginner's questions, plus a wealth of detailed material as well.

These are available on Amazon and the Gun Digest store.

Autographed copies are available from my website.

Or, you could surf around here for all of that same info on this forum, and converse with fellow knife enthusiasts as well. 🤷‍♂️

GKD is generally not the place to hawk your wares, incidentally.

If you don't want to pay for something, there is a great online resource right here from AG Russell's site... https://agrussell.com/encyclopedia https://agrussell.com/encyclopedia/blade-shapes https://agrussell.com/knife-terms

This will teach you all of those terms, all the different types of blade profiles (leaning towards traditionals, but still) and its basically a weath of info. Go there, go here, go ask questions, all kinds of free ways to get all of this info. I picked it up quite casually just reading about and being into knives. Read the Wikipedia article, even, that'll help you if you're to the point where you're questioning the difference between a ricasso and a slipjoint...

It’s not about being cheap and don’t want to pay for a book…
interacting here will give you much more specifics to your question, from people that are actually using the knife yore asking for.
‘I’m sure this book is fine for people that are not much into knives and looking for general info… To me, looking for information here is much more worthy than reading general info book, no offense to the author/op.

Paying for common knowledge and opinions seems foolish to me

Lol. You paid for one here too. Gold has its benefits.

I was probably too hard on Jason. Kudos to him for writing a book. I’m sure its great. I won’t be buying his based on his description, not its cover. I don’t have a lot of unanswered knife questions, or knives left to buy.

I haven’t bought a book or a magazine in years, they used to be one of my addictions.

Information is valuable knowledge is power. We have it all at our fingertips now. Yet people are getting dumber go figure.

Congrats on making a book! I don't get the negative reaction here, the op has been a long time member, and wrote a book on knives, not seeing a problem.

I'll definately grab one next payday.

Best of luck on the book.
I rarely if at all buy books like this anymore. In the 90's and before yes, but now every ? is just a click away. For knives BF is my main source, and what brought me here in the 1st place.

Guys, I do get it. The trick here is that the new guy won’t know all the places we take for granted to go get the info. The folks at Blade requested an overview of this material, so I wrote it. It’s only common knowledge if the seeker knows where to look.

May also work well for a spouse who wants to understand a bit more or be a little more involved with their knife nuts hobby without dedicating their life to it

I don't think anyone is bashing the OP, I think that people are merely commenting on the irony- advertising a book about answering knife questions on a forum dedicated to answering knife questions, where hundreds, if not thousands of people are eager to answer any knife question a person could ask, and for free.

I mean, lets face it, if a friend or co-worker asked us "Where's a good place to acquire general knowledge about knives?". Would we recommend they buy a book, or would we recommend they join Bladeforums, not only for knowledge about knives, but also because it's just an all-around great place for knife enthusiasts.

But that's my interpretation. I don't presume to speak for others.

I'm a capitalist at heart, so I hope you sell a million copies. Two million. There's no such thing as too much knife knowledge, or too many resources for it. Congrats on the book. Good luck with sales :).
