Of all the Victorinox knives I've checked out on the web the Centurian looks like what I would want. I very much like locking blades, and I demand a phillips screwdriver.

I think the Kershaw is a pretty bitchin' knife too.

Victor is cheaper and more usefull????

Except for the color, the Centurion is the same as the Adventurer model. I have carried an Adventurer since they invented the design. It has all the tools that I use frequently with minimum thickness and weight. I wouldn't part with any of those blades. There is even a version of the Adventurer (red handle) with the Boys Scouts of America logo. It is my upgrade from the BSA knife I started carrying over 40 years ago. That one had a philips head screwdriver as well.

I can't speak about the Centurian.

But the Kershaw Double Cross is definitely a "bitchin' knife !" :D

Y'all must know I'm a Cheap A$$, Poorman by now.

I can save around $15 by going Victor, and while I don't get a wharncliff blade, I think I do get a usefull locking blade as well as some usefull tools...

So tell me a little more about the edge holding and such on recent manufactured Victors!

My V-nox Explorer holds an edge very well, and gets really sharp. The tools are useful, and the fit and finish is great!
It would be nice if they offered a warncliffe or sheepsfoot blade on some of their models.

I lusted after a double cross for months. I finally had a little extra money (that some custom maker wasn't asking for) and ordered one. When it arrived I was really pleased by the size of the knife and the shape of the slabs. I also think that the size and choice of blade shapes is just about perfect. But......don't make the mistake of opening both blades at once, and mine is so stiff that you can hardly open the blades with the thumb studs. Even a little work with oil and lapping compound hasn't helped. Still, it's a bitchin' design that I would love to see some good custom maker do right for about $250. Racer Roy

KNOWLEDGE THAT IS NOT SHARED IS LOST.

Hi,

If you need to have a Philips screwdriver, go for a model that has one that opens out "at the end". I find those that open out at right-angles to the handle, pretty much useless.

My EDC SAK is the Explorer, and it does all I want, but no locking blades. The magnifying glass in the Explorer is surprisingly useful.

I've used a buddies Tinker a couple times and that T handle effect of the phillips was fine in those cases....

However I see your point. So is there a model with a locking main blade AND a phillips that 'comes out the end'?

Joe Shmoe

This site has some with a locking main blade as well as the phillips that opens on the end. The Atlas looks tempting, as well as the Tradesman. Downside is the locking ones from Victorinox don't have the small, pen blade.

I have done some web searching and thinking. The SAKs I am most interested in are the locking blade ones. I see I can get a Centurian for $19.95 plus shipping (I think at eknifeworks.com).

Those suckers are almost 4 1/2" long. The biggest thing I usually ever carried in that pocket is like 3 3/4". But combine that with the thickness it takes to hold several tools, and that booger is going to be one BIG lump in the pocket.

Even a Tinker is a bigger lump than I am used to.

Thoughts?
