Cartophilis--- make mine white lightning

Sounds like a great time!

When you get that rust off try Ren Wax. Havn't got mine wet yet, but think it would be enough. Would think the marine tuff cloth would work as well.

Hey, just hit me, your a knife maker...why don't you satin it up so it won't rust as easy. I may do mine...or pay someone to.

dont want to blast Ban's full polish edge, it will serious dull it, i'm good at convex but, i'm not Ban!!!!!!!!!!!! he is my Bro..

It is so strange. I have gotten my satin's wet, and dirty no rust at all. I got my pumpkin GW wet in a pool, and forgot to dry out the sheath. I wiped the knife and put it back in the sheath, then like 3 hours later pulled it out to use, and it was still all wet. With chlorine pool water........not a spot.

I would rather have a comp finish, with some nice patina, than not at all (of course I don't have one), so it would not stop me from buying one.

Could wipe it dry and spray the blade down with silicone after each use, even if you ren-wax it, and especially after working in water

My thinking on this is that the satins and dc finish seals the blade a certain bit. The comp finish or a stipped (non-coated) blade tend to be more porous, therefore more prone to rusting. I had the same thing happen to a stripped Hell Razor.

Although, Jerry does state that INFI isn't supposed to be stainless. And a little rust just adds character!;)

It's a layer of decarb that wasn't fully removed after HT I think. Been working bit by bit getting my CGFBM refinished and it's easy to tell the difference between the "real" infi and the layer of decarb. The layer is really really thin, but incredibly difficult to remove. I really wish I had a sandblaster to do the work for me, since a scotchbrite wheel in a drill is really slow going, and doesn't get into the corrugations.

Dimples are rust magnets. I onced washed my dimpled user knife in hot water and it rust within a few minutes when I forgot to wipe it down right away.

Even mini dimples that are left behind when I grind rust really fast. I typically let a satin blade sit in the bucket of water for a few minutes after grinding to catch any traces of leftover dimples by looking for signs of rust.

That is a good trick for finding dimples. I have been using a loupe.

INFI is rust resistant because of all the alloys not chromium. SR101 rusts if you look at it sideways while S7 is a lot like INFI rust wise but it has some chromium.

To find dimples...

Just let the blade get a tad warm when you grind. A quick dunk into some water and just let it sit in open air. The warm blade along with water tends to bring out the rust really quickly. You can get the same results by washing the blade with really warm water then just leave it wet to air dry. Any traces of dimples will quickly pop out with rust.

Yep!
We got The Rust Razor, The RustHammer and the RustSquatch:D

Need some serious Renwax treatment:thumbup:

My Hell Razor Comp rusted also, but the important part of the blade along the cutting edge did not rust. Only a few crannies on the rough unfinished part of the blade got a light coating of oxidation. In my experience rough finished metal always rusts easier. The area around the cutting edge is polished. I have had satin finished infi resist two days (plus or minus) of ocean water without rusting.

I think the competition finish, light rust and all, looks just fine. I like it better than the coated finish and hope more knives with the competition finish are offered.

I'll tell you, I was one of the first to belly ache about how fast they rust, but I'm with you on this....I still like the Comp finish....they just don't make great safe queens :) They make great users.

so dose infi rust easy without coating?

Not at all...were just speaking of the comp finished blades that were left raw with dimples, small scratches and uncoated.

All other that came before these 3 from Busse were in Satin or DC finish.

The comps shouldn't rust easy either if kept oiled or waxed. With any steel, inperfections on surface is a magnet for rust.

well sure, but as i understand it from this thread it started to rust during the time he was using it. that is a little well extreme comparing to other steels that only might stain if you leave them i a wet sheath over the night.
