Has anybody removed the horn handles and replaced it with wood or something else. I love my AKB, but the horn just doesn't give that warm feeling like it does on the Khuks. I was told that the handles are possibly JB welded on, so how hard are they to get off. Plus I just gave mine a vintage look by blueing it and then sanded the blue off, leaving some of it on..well crap I suck with decriptions anyway.... here's a pic.

Edited to add: Well you really can't see it in the pic either, guess I suck at descriptions and pics, there goes my dream job of being a police sketch artist.

Grab a large chisel and a good hammer and those scales will come right off - and fast. ;) A few smacks on the pins will push those through as well.

One note: clean up the entire blade (tang included) the best you can using a scotchbright pad. (Use the chisel to remove the remaining gunk first) Then, put the finish that you want on the blade first, before attaching new handles. You'll see the wisdom in this later...

Get a nice heavy hardwood like mesquite, osage, oak, etc. and fashion new handle slabs that will be as tough as the knife itself.

Josh Feltman, thanks for the link.

That makes me want to get one of the HI Bowies even more then I wanted one before! Beautiful.

That my friend was a cruel, cruel thing to do. Mean, nasty, no I mean it. 2 minutes for being the Instigator and a 10 minute game misconduct (sorry hockey reference);) Great video by the way. Hey Uncle I was looking for this special Bowie...:D

I am waiting for my "special 20inch bone handle AK" which with luck should be here at any moment!!!!!

That bowie is really cool, but it kinda lost the HI charm.

Hey Pen, I don't think that things sharp enuff. :D

I really love the Bowies.:D
I wish I'd had one when I worked for Monfort (phew!) up in Greeley before college. Might've been too heavy tho'. Those Boners had a real keen competition on sharpness. Couldn't find a SS specimen in the place.
Still have the tight white scar from a slip. Through the meat into the tendon and firmly embedded into the bone. Of my wrist. They all laughed and howled....Crazy Boners.

Once my AK Bowie is back from the Sarki shop (Terry is making me a Sasquatch/1849 frog hybrid sheath) I think I'll spend the winter trying to put some purty Osage orange or Aussie Gidgee wood scales on it.
Pen put a killer convex edge on it. It'd be a shame not to use it!

to my Ak bowie. The feather etch pattern gives this piece the well-deserved name "Silverwing."

Note the relocated retention strap 0n the sheath. Keeps that sucker in there securely!
