I first got on the internet in '92 or '93, by means that weren't entirely legal at the time. Since I'm probably covered by statutes of limitation (or whatever that term is), I'll admit that I was gaining access to the internet via the local library. It went online far more quickly than most (especially in this particular area) and by hook or by crook, an account name and a password became available for a few of us, unknown to the owner. Everything was text back then, the modems of the day couldn't really handle images, let alone video. It was a very different internet.
I consider myself very fortunate to have seen what things looked like back then.
I've caught some memes and slipped around many others. I did miss the peak of AYB on account of my profession at the time, but as a late arrival (and an outsider looking in) I can't help but see the parallels. Without the intent of unduly insulting anyone, "All your base are belong to us" strikes a chord in my consciousness as it refers to US foreign policy as of late. I figured that it was culturally relevant.
I'm a bit more connected now, but the oldies remain the goodies. I was honestly and pleasantly surprised that anyone caught on to this one. Good on you, Kazeryu and Jake.
And yes, even though it's considered somewhat cliche in certain circles, one does hear this time and time again in online games. (At least when they're playing with me.) In flight sims especially, nothing quite drives the point home as bombing the enemy team's airfield harshly, vulching numerous folks in the process, and topping it off with "All your base are belong to us" over a global channel on the long trip home to rearm and refuel.
Memes are fascinating to me. Take off every 'Zig. You know what you doing.
