A friend and I recently helped a neighbor renovate her house and in return she gave us a bunch of old stuff she didnt want, most was junk, but i scrounged up an old Alltrade axe.
The axe head was broken off and covered in rust but i could make out "ALLTRADE" and smaller print next to it "Japan 3 1/2lbs" after i soaked it in vinegar to get the rust off the patina showed one of two things i cant figure out.
1. someone did a differential HT on the blade
2. the classic high carbon blade forge welded onto mild steel (hopefully not this one)
The haft looks like it used to be a full 30" and had a green and white sticker that said "MONTREAL" with some more writing below but i couldnt make it out it had already been scraped and peeled a bit
sadly i didnt take any pictures before i started working on it to make it my new camp axe.
cut the haft down to 24" and spliced the head piece back on with gorilla glue and jb weld and soon some more epoxy. and pretty sooni will finish sanding it all down and adding a nice dark varnish and some linseed oil
the head i plan to cut down with a torch and file down to a proper size (1 3/4 - 2lb) then put it on and add the shims. if it is mild steel ill see if i can cook it with some more carbon for a day or two and then get a HT going in it.
anywho what id like is if someone could point me in the right direction about the history of alltrade, and how they made their axes. any info would be helpful
thanks
