Ok, over the years I have seen the normal S1 SOG Bowie listed all over the place. Then on occasion I see these Almar SOG Bowies going for a hell of a lot of money. The knives seem to be the same configuration as the S1 SOG bowie, but with different materials, and stamped with the Almar Logo & Mac V SOG Logo.

Can anyone tell me what Almar SOG knives are?

Were these a joint production of the bowie between these two companies?

What makes them so much more expensive? Also, if anyone can give me a run down on the materials used I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I used to have an Al Mar MACV SOG "One-Zero" model. It was the one with the stacked leather handle. I think the sheath was made by Tex Shoemaker.

I believe the steel was AUS8A....but I might be wrong. It held an edge ok....BUT....

You see, I am radiologic technologist, and I wanted to see how much tang was under the leather handle...so I xrayed it. I was shocked. The tang, starting at the guard, was about the width of a pencil...if even that. And I am sure that there was no differential temper there either. I lost my faith in the strength of the knife and then sold it.

It was nicely done other than that. Very nice design on the surface.

Now that is exactly what I need to know

Those are the things most of use would have never had the opportunity to discover. No longer interested in that knife

Thanks

I am glad I could help!!

I really liked that knife but it really disheartened me when I discovered how it was made.

SOG Specialites MACV SOG knife is much stouter but the one that I had came with an edge bevel that was too damned steep. I got rid of that one too.

I made my own SOG Bowie out of 5160 and it is differentially treated, cryro'ed, and gun blued.

It is a mean knife.
