Almost finished first sheath build

Ok, almost got my first sheath completed for Busse SOB. I need to clean up the welt with a knife and sandpaper (80 grit, dry or damp?)

Super excited. I think the belt clip on my first sheath was tough but I don't really like belts so all of my builds will have one.

I learned ALOT. Made some mistakes that are evident. The obvious one is the clip has a rivet in backwards but whatever. It's still functional. I don't have tools to bevel the edge yet. I'm working with most basics of tools right now.

Feedback is appreciated. Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Not bad at all. :)

One suggestion, get yourself some sandpaper, a variety pack from the home supply will get you started. A nice rough grit will help you get those edges trued up, then you can go with a finer grit to get them polished up a bit. You can also use that sandpaper to bevel the edges down as well, just rub em at an angle and watch the sharp edges go away

Like I said, so far so good! Practice will make perfect. :D

The little SOB is a nice knife huh?

First sheath and you're installing belt clips? You're way beyond me.

I think your pattern could use some tweaking, it looks like there is needless width on the blade portion. I think the best part of Paul Long's (sheathmaker here on BF) DVD is his patternaking segment.

How did you punch your holes?

You did some good work, and isn't it cool to have a finished piece in your hand? Well done man, keep at it!

Hey all, thanks for all the feedback so far. Totally agree with the extra width. I think the problem was in the execution of the pattern. I used a drip punch with 5/16 bit. Worked great but I didn't do a good job with the spacer.

The sob is great. It's as close as I've come to my quest for a 1 knife option for outdoors work that's not a chose to carry.

I'll try to get the sand paper in the next hew day. Thanks for the feedback.

Ps all that info in stickies was invaluable.

Oh, regarding the edges, some saddle soap, water, and elbow grease does some great things for them. I like to top it off with gum tragacanth and a wooden beveler but the finishing touch is always with a piece of deer antler, shines it up quite nicely.

So the gum tragacanth goes on after burnishing with the saddle soap, etc? And then you burnish some more after it's on?

You can make a nice edge with nothing but the saddle soap but I like the extra sheen from the gun tragacanth. I use different tools to burnish; a wooden beveler, a piece of antler, a hunk of denim jeans, an old cotton pillow case. I think the elbow grease is the key ingredient.
