Yesterday during lunch, I went to a local convenience store to pick up a noon drink. As I pulled in to the parking lot, I saw 2 police patrol cars parked outside. I went inside and saw officer #1 looking me up and down as soon as I walked in.

I stood behind them to wait to pay, officer #2 says "oh we're not in line, we're just trying to get out of the heat!" They continued to talk among themselves. When I reached inside my pocket to get my money (the same side I carry my knife), officer #1 is still looking me up and down, then says "excuse me sir......

... is that a SEBENZA in your pocket?!"

I was carrying my Large 21 with only the tip of the butt sticking out of my pocket. I told him yes and he asked if he could see it. He mentioned that he had been wanting to handle one but couldn't find any places in our city to do so. After wrist flicking it open (*cringe*) a couple of times, he handed it back to me and told me to have a good day.

This would be a pretty normal story, but this is the same officer that once (about 2 years ago) confiscated my Bark River Pro Scalpel from me since it was a "weapon". I don't think he remembered me tho.

PS - I did get my knife back after a battle with the police station ;)

That's awesome he even knows what a Sebenza is!
It's terrible that he knows of CRK, but doesn't know not to WRIST FLICK this knife open.

Glad he didn't try to swoop it!
Congrats on winning your other knife back!
Silly cops and their misconception of codes.

Pardon my ignorance on this subject. Why can't a sebenza be flicked open? Is it too fragile? What happens? How is the knife hurt?

Cool story.

CRK claims the Sebenza is not meant to be flicked open because it puts unnecessary stress/shock on the parts. Ever since I got a Sebenza I don't flick folders open anymore.... I don't even see it being necessary as I can open plenty fast by just thumbing it open.

Yeah. Never understood flicking...

I am curious to know if anyone has ever had a Sebenza break or fail from flicking it. With all the talk of "bank vaults" I would assume that if I can flick my Kershaw a few thousand times so far with out it breaking I could flick a sebenza.

I am not trying to be a smart ass. My grail is a small Insingo W/inlay, and I have a habit of nervously flicking knives.

Same here. Flicking a knife is completely pointless IMO. If I even trust someone enough to hand them my Sebenza I'll say "Please don't flick it open."

I personally haven't made several thousands of perfect Sebenza's and other frame-lock knives but I'll definitely take advice from someone who has: Chris Reeve.

A Sebenza will be fine for a long time but Chris Reeve wants the knife to last you a life time. Doesn't matter how well built a knife is after years and years of hard wrist flicking a knife will become damaged. It's like slamming your front door closed every day multiple times a day. If you nervously flick knives all day then don't do it with a Sebenza.

These aren't fragile knives by any means, the flicking I'm talking about is really abusive hard flicking with your wrist. If you just use your thumb it will be fine.

^^^ What he wrote, and it's not just Sebenzas. Wrist-flicking is punishing for any folder.

Kind of like flipping the cylinder shut on a revolver. Do you need to do it? No. Can you do it x number of times without major damage to the gun? Probably. Should the fact that by doing something you don't need to do that may eventually cause un-neccessary damage keep you from buying said product? That's up to you.

Sounds like that cop was just busting your balls a little or possibly hadn't handled one and didn't know about the wrist flipping. No harm done and he did give your Sebenza the nod and handed it back with a couteous reply. No harm, no foul IMO.

^^what mongomondo and cziv said
Jeez guys, whaddaya want..? THere's some cops actually being cool and being happy about knives, admiring your blade. I think everybody should be a little happier about this :)
And don't be silly about wristflicking, a couple of times won't damage it at all

cool story

I quess his first attempt on " confiscating" didnt work ( since you did get your knife back). I think he may have been trying to add to his collection and at the last minute, he recognized you and new you would request it back. He gave you a little snub but all ended well-Mark

The same officer confiscated your Bark River Pro Scalpel prior this event. I thought Texas was a little more lenient then the rest of the states when it comes to knives and guns. Especially a BR Pro Scalpel, not a very large knife by any stretch. I can see why you were apprehensive. It is a scary situation when a citizen in good standing can loose personnel property just walking around minding their own business. I'm glad nothing happened.

Or, rather :D, more like flipping the cylnder open. And that isn't easily fixed...blech. ;)

For the record, I was impressed he even knew what a sebenza was, let alone it was all the way down in my pocket. But I was a little nervous about his "stolen" remark due to the previous event.

But I was pleasantly surprised when he complimented my knife and gave it back.

As for the flicking remarks, just deal with it. Some of us like to take care of our things. Any true knife freak would cringe at the thought of flicking open a ~$400 knife.....except maybe a Strider or XM18 ;)

Yea, sounds like jerks. "Cool knife can I see it?" I can't beleive someone wold be such a jerk. Sounds like a knife nut. Dunno whta's typical about that...
The question is, what would they have done if he said "no"? One time I was pulled over for no reason, other than the fact that I was lost and "looked suspicious". The cops asked if they could search my car. I said "no". They told me it was for their own safety. I still said "no". Know what they did? They searched it anyways. Told me they couldn't find my license number in their computer, so they were gonna impound my car and they had to "inventory" everything in it. Good thing they didn't inventory and impound the sebenza.
