Almost Winter Camel Toe Camp

Back from South America to an almost winter camp trip. Lots of bushwhacking, fire prep, frost, cold, and tool play.

This was the sky as we were on our way to the trailhead.

It was supposed to be very cold and rain…

The trail was looking promising, but in the morning most of the snow and frost was gone. We did get a good rain through the night that seemed to stop right when it was time to wake up and pack up the camp.

Partially frozen pond

I made a hole to keep our dinner cold

My Camp was a simple lean-to with a tarp

Our water source

Jay did his best work yet on this pipe…

Simple pot suspender made with wire. The end of one stick is carved to lock in place on the split stick allowing the pot height to be adjusted.

Siberian Fire-Lay

Pork chops

New scarf hat from Peru

Jay hard at work with his Tramontina 14” bolo

Rice was made in these magic bags…

Finished chops

The night was cold, but this SOL space blanket made a good reflector and caught the heat.

Morning fire

Cold weather mode…

Food and the Camel Toe fork. I took some Russian Barley I first tried in St. Petersburg last year. It’s pretty easy to make and is like brown rice.

Jay and his new orange scarf…

My odd tool trio

The long road out…

We changed it up this time. Somebody mentioned White Castle so we decided to go there this time around.

awesome pics, rb! now all i need is a hugh hefner style robe to go with that pipe and my woods setup is complete...i'll post my pics by tomorrow.

this bear doesn't sleep in motels at night.

a webbing comes in handy for hauling back big logs back to camp...if you're going to use a hammock then even better since there's no weight penalty.

worked really well hauling back a ton of smaller stuff too for my wood stove.

i never bothered to use a reflector blanket until this trip (maybe it's because i had that other brand where it's way overbuilt, the silver side isn't as shiny as this one and there's not enough tie out points). it worked so well i was down to my base layers during the night...it's a must now for any future winter trips.

on the hike out i spotted this small tree with what seemed like a disproportionately massive burl.

by the way, this is that magic bag. it's rated up to 400° f. the rice cooked the same as in the past when we used a titanium pot and we re-used the same bag to cook mashed potatoes later that night...really convenient for winter outings so i can just use my pot strictly for water boiling/snow melting.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing. Looks like a lot of fun.

you're welcome!

Looks like a great trip,

sure is...always fun to hang with rb.

man you guys walked in from the barricade? great pics and trip as always

thanks! yeah, seasonal road closure but the other parking lot is just past that over pass. i get it that there's not enough budget to plow that road but closing it when there's no real snow yet?
