This could be the wrong subforum. Sorry if it is.

Anyone take note of the amount of Leatherman tools chosen over fixed blade knives? What does everyone think?

A lot of them have chosen a hatchet and a multi tool on the show. I am not sure whether they have a choice of a fixed blade. I don’t remember anyone using one.

A guy last season dressed out a moose with his multi-tool. It looked like a Wave Plus!

Yeah, a couple of them have fixed blades this season. Honestly, IIRC, most of them in past seasons have carried FB knives. This is the first season I can recall in which multiple people have opted for a MT over a dedicated blade.

I think the reason you're seeing so many people graduating up to axes and saws is that for any sort of outdoors situation where you're going to be sticking around, a fixed blade is about one of the worst tools possible for any sort of heavy wood processing/shelter building. I've built countless shelters and slept under the stars under a roof of my own making many, many times. Whenever I was going to be there a few to several days, I used an axe and a Silky pocket saw.

I especially would not want to be processing wood with a fixed blade if I was in a situation where calories were ultra scarce and conservation of energy was absolutely critical like those guys are. I've watched all the seasons of Alone, and am looking forward to seeing these people actually try to make the 100 days. Hopefully it changes up the dynamic the show's had previously, where the winner was simply the person who had shown up the fattest then just laid in his shelter and let his body fat carry him to the win. That gets super boring.

I keep waiting for the year one of the contestants starts a homestead. Not just survive, but thrive. They come to pick him up, and he has a log cabin. With a well and livestock.
THIS^^^^Mankind has been surviving in the wilderness for decades. Of course there were no rules and limit to items most times so they took what they needed to flourish for many years if they had the skills and the knowledge to do it.

I like to watch. Strange how random the ability to find food varies among contestants and the differences in their exact locales. I agree the ability to efficiently process wood is a key in choosing cutting tools. It's also interesting how many eat poo and get sick and have not thought out the psychological consequences of being away from home.

Someone with zero family ties, and no social life. Would have a huge advantage. I also think fatigue and hunger play a major role in some of their emotional breakdowns. They wouldn’t miss their families near as much if they were at a resort and well fed.

Its the isolation that definately gets most contestants before starvation. I know for a fact that would be what would get me, right at about day 3! :D
