hey everyone, i'm hoping the master sheath masters here could help me with a little problem i've come across. :)

i have a leather sheath that i received with my knife. Every time i sheath and un-sheath the knife it has glue residue left on the knife and everytime i have to keep wiping it off.

is there anyway i can fix this? i was thinking maybe boiling the sheath in hot water would remove the excess glue from the inside of the sheath but i'm worried that it may damage the sheath in the process.

thanks

An odd problem. Hmm. Where is the glue on the knife? What kind of sheath, style I mean, is it?

I can't imagine what kind of glue would do that.

I wouldn't suggest boiling the sheath.

the glue is located on the face of the blade towards the tip. im not sure what kind of sheath style it is just a leather one, kinda like a pouch.

i've thought about heating the sheath with maybe a blowdryer on high/hot and see if the leather will absorb some of the clue as it melts.?

Frankly I think your best and safest bet is to just keep sheathing and unsheathing the knife and wiping off the glue until it stops.
The glue is limited in quantity as overspill, not like you're dipping it into a glue pot.:p

Just watch some inane show and do the repetition, it's gotta end some time.

I think heating and all that will likely do nothing to the glue and will definitely affect the leather.

Just my 2 cents.:)

Definitely don't boil it. You'll harden the leather enough to ruin it.

I can't really imagine any glue that would be a potential problem for more than a day or two. Also, if it's just wiping off, is it really glue? Are you sure it's not just oil? Anyway, I'd try an old Tshirt and stick ruler (or something similar) to clean it out.

Yeah... good point. I've gotten glue (barge cement) outside of the welt before and it's never rubbed off onto the blade or if it did it only happened once as the stuff skins over and dries pretty quickly.

i'll try the keep sheathing and unsheating approach. i'm sure over time it will go away.

thanks for your input fellas it was greatly appreciated. also i've learned something new today. do not boil leather sheaths :D.

cheers

Just keep using the knife and wipe off the glue each time. It will eventually go away, this is just the break in period, be patient.

You might take a peek down the sheath with a flashlight, maybe whittle
a sharp stick if you can see a pile of glue there and try to scarf it out
make the whittle job like a back scratcher with an L shape at the end
tiny of course and a bit sharp, just an idea...

I rather doubt that your problem is with glue or cement. Once cured that stuff does not want to rub off on anything!! I would be more apt to think it is with a sealer or type of finish. As others suggest, sheathing and withdrawal will probably solve your problem. Boiling the sheath will change it to a very unsightly look like crisp bacon---only more brittle!!

I agree - that is not glue. Well - it is not Barge cement - unless the welt was glued with some odd glue - or it clumped (like a big booger of glue down there) - it is not glue.
