Alox bantam vs the Hoover.

Okay, so once in a while I do some of the house work as kind of a gift to my better half. Karen has put up with me for the better part of 4 decades, so I'll break out the vacuum or dust rag and Windex and do some house cleaning as a way of saying I really do appreatiate her.

So I'm vacuuming away in the bedroom upstairs, and as I go a bit under the bed, the Hoover does a weird noise and then a high pitched buzzing like it's locked up. It sucked something up that was laying just under the bed. I shut down the vacuum and look and can't see anything. Whatever it grabbed is way up in there, out of sight. I take out the bag and no luck. I have to take the machine appart.

The top half of a Hoover upright is held on to the lower half by a large screw through the point where they slide together. I'm about to go downstairs for my handy home owner tool kit, when I think of my mantra; Maximum minimalism!

Okay, I dig into my pocket and take out the ultra slim alox bantam I put back in my pocket a few days ago. The combo tool fits in the combination flat and Phillips screw holding the Hoover upper half to the lower motor half. It's one of those weird Phillips that has a wider flat groove so a regular driver can fit. The combo tool unscrews the two halves, and then I can see part of a balled up sock wadded up in the passage. I can just barely get a hold of it with my fingers, but can't pull it out.

I wonder, the combo tool has worked so far. I reach in and use the end lower point on the combo tool like a cargo hook, and snare a part of the jammed sock up far enough that I can get a better grip and pull. Out comes a mangled up white sock that I recognize as one of Karen's. I get the vacuum back together with a bit of wiggling and the alox bantam gets the take down screw back in tight. Vacuum now works great. Little alox bantam worked well taking the Hoover apart and putting it back together again.

I love the combo tool!

The alox bantam and classic combo really does everything I need on a real world day to day basis. Of course right now I'm in my Dr. Jeckle mode, so the next full moon I'll probably revert back to Mr. Hyde and sneak the old war horse SI back in my pocket. I guess the eternal conflict between the yin and the yang never ends.

I really wish Victorinox would put the keyring back on the alox bantam!

you've been in the situation where a single blade knife wont help you much or cant help you at all....

the bantam is a genius idea to put basic essential usefull tools combination along with knife blade... you cant get any simpler than bantam....

dont have the alox bantam but got several in cellidors and nylons.... not as thin, but still lightweight, comfortable to carry, got tweezer and toothpick... AND... a keyring hehehe...

thanks for sharing carl!

There is some real satisfaction one gets from using a minimalist tool vs. a Leatherman Ultra 3000 Megatool. I can't quite figure out why it fires off the satisfaction neurons in one's brain, but it sure seems to.

Great story Carl! I got both the alox Bantam and a Bantam with cellidor scales, but don't carry them very often. There's just too many small screws in my life and the screw driver on the regular can opener works excellent on most of them.

Cool story, Carl! Knowing you, it doesn't surprise me at all. ;) Quick question: If you wouldn't have had the alox Bantam on you, and if push came to shove, could you have done the job with your Classic SD?

I didn't think about it at the time, so I just did a little expriment for your question. I went and laid out the Hoover, and took the SD tip of the nailfile blade to the take down screw.

It was a little small, but it grabbed deep in the Phillips head, and I turned the screw almost all the way out, then screwed it back in. So, yes, I could have in a pinch, used the SD/nail file tool of the classic. The handle is a little small for the torque, so I had to close the the knife half way, so I had a 90 degree tool handle. It did work.

Great story Carl:thumbup:
Just like I'm starting to get used to the little() extra bulk in my pocket from my Farmer, I'm tempted again to go for maximum minimalism and ease of carry and swap the Farmer for my Alox Bantam again.

It's just that I use the awl that much on a day to day basis:p

If the Bantam got jus a little extra layer for that awl, it would be THE perfect SAK for me:thumbup:

Sorry, it was not a Vic - but the leatherman opened up a "plugged" hose on my shopvac the other day.... one great ball of cat hair about the size of a dozen mice interlocked! Like you, Carl, I was thinking about a "dedicated" tool like a hemostat - but then I remembered and the Leatherman cleared away the mess! Peace, and Merry Christmas to you all
