I'm considering purchasing a SAK with "alox" handles. I've never owned a knife with alox handles. What this boils down to is.... Is alox metal or plastic? Thanks in advance.

Alox is their word for aluminum.

Yep... Alox is plenty tough & dosen't show scratches easily. The Cellidor handled SAK's are good also but, will scuff up. I use Flitz metal polish to remove the scuffmarks on the Cellidor ones. The main thing is get one with the tools You want & use most often. Many choices here... Enjoy!

I have alox and plastic and the alox knives just seem better made - not that the plastic scales are bad.

Good, textured grip on the alox handle, too

I always want new knives, but I just can't find a knife as good as my Alox Soldier.

I just keep coming back to it. Feels good when I use it, when I carry it, I don't ever worry about breaking it, it's got the tools I use every day (I can twist, poke, pry, etc with my knife but not with my blade), and I've never once thought "Oh man what if this screws up the handles?"

Water, fire, dirt, loose change, run over by vehicles... not going to noticeably hurt the alox.

I love it.

Hi,

As your resident metallurgist, ALOX stands for Aluminum Oxidized. Using nitric acid (HNO3), the aluminum is oxizidized which gives it a surface layer of Al2O3 (Aluminum Oxide), a relatively hard and corrosion resistant ceramic. This can be dyed in various different colors such as red, blue, copper, etc. It can also be left clear (Soldiers Knife).

Hope this helps.

Joe

You'll like both SAKs in red "plastic" handles and alox handles. If, however, you find an alox model witht the tools you want/need, you'll like it better than plastic. The alox knives are built a bit stronger.

:)

I prefer cellidor models. They have more of the tools I use and come in a variety attractive colors. Also I like the thinner main blade.

I have a small spartan. I would like to buy a Alox Solo or a Alox Bantam.

Do these two knives have the same thickness (although the Solo is longer)

The plastic is quite tough enough for most needs and feels "warmer" especially on cold days out of doors. I have owned SAK's with both. The Plastic seem not to be as bulky, but both are good. It depends on your own taste and need.

Ya mind if I quote you on that? Its pretty much the way I feel about it. No matter what else I carry, I always have my soldier around.

Agreed on the Soldier. I've always had the red plastic handled ones, and finally bought a Soldier - I was amazed at how well it was made. It's getting more pocket time than I orginally thought it would. Funny, considering I bought it with the intent of just adding it my collection. Kept it my pocket a few days, and it still keeps showing up there pretty regularly:D
